2/17/16 Apollo
had an appointment today with the specialist and we received great news.
The vet strongly feels that his mucocele was misdiagnosed and that Apollo
likely suffered a trauma which caused his neck to become infected.
Although the swelling is in the correct location for a mucocele, it would
not have responded as it did simply to antibiotics. Apollo will need
to remain on the antibiotics and then will go back to the specialist in six
weeks to be reassessed. In the meantime, he will be neutered next
week. Apollo continues to do wonderful in his foster home. He
gets along great with the children and other dogs.

Apollo
is doing great in his foster home! His foster mom reports that Apollo
is very sweet and eager to please. He loves snuggling with his foster
family and going for car rides.
Apollo visited our vet last week and is now being treated for whipworms,
roundworms, hookworms, and Giardia. He should now be able to gain some
much needed weight.
Apollo is still scheduled to see the specialist on February 17th and to
have his surgery the next day to remove his salivary gland. Please
continue to help with Apollo's vet bills and consider sponsoring this sweet
boy. He has a long road to go and will need your support! Once
he has recovered, this boy is going to be an amazing addition to a lucky
family!

Apollo
was transported into rescue this weekend and just arrived at his new foster
home. He is doing great with the three other dogs, both male and
female. Apollo is also in foster with four children, ages 3 to 11.
We will update his page once his foster family gets to know him better.
After treatment with antibiotics at the shelter, Apollo's swelling in his
neck has decreased significantly. He is scheduled to see a specialist
in two weeks and then will have surgery to remove the salivary gland.
This surgery is estimated around $1700. Please consider donating
towards Apollo's vet care! Once he has healed from this surgery,
Apollo will live a normal life. He is a sweet, young boy with a
wonderful disposition!
1/25/16 -
Apollo was found as a stray with a large swelling around his neck.
He was taken to the vet on Thursday and they believe he has a salivary
mucocele. This is a collection of saliva that has leaked from a
damaged salivary gland or duct, and has accumulated in the tissues.
This is a painless swelling of the neck which can be caused by things such
as trauma from choke collars, bite wounds. or chewing on foreign materials.
Apollo was started on medication to decrease the swelling and he will
require surgery to remove the damaged gland. The surgery is a
permanent cure and Apollo will be able to live a normal life once he has
recovered.
Apollo will be transported to Maryland and is still looking for a foster
home. He will need a placement close to one of our rescue vets to
complete his surgery. Volunteers at the shelter indicate Apollo is
very sweet and seemed friendly with other dogs. If you are able to
provide a foster home for Apollo, apply today so we can get this boy out of
the shelter soon! |
