Adopting a Boxer

Thank you for your interest in adopting a Boxer from AABR.  The volunteers of AABR have successfully placed thousands of Boxers in permanent, loving new homes.

Please read these materials carefully to familiarize yourself with AABR's adoption program and eligibility requirements. If you conclude that you want to adopt an AABR Boxer, and we hope that you do, please follow the application procedure outlined.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

Is a Boxer right for me?

1.  View the available dogs.
This page will show you the dogs currently available in our rescue program.  Keep in mind that there may be delays in updating the page, so there may be dogs available that are not listed.  Similarly, not all of the listed dogs may actually still be available.  We try to keep things current, but new dogs enter our program and are adopted from us regularly.

2.  Fill out an adoption application.  (you will be asked for 3 references and Vet information on current pets or pets you've owned.)
This gives us information about you and your family and helps us to match you with a suitable boxer.  If a good match is not currently available, this application also allows us quick access to your information to compare with incoming dogs.  As you will see, the adoption application is quite detailed.  Our mission is not just placing homeless boxers into new homes but ensuring that those homes will be permanent.  Our intention is not to be nosey.  The thoroughness of our questionnaire is meant to aid us in our attempt to find the best homes for our dogs and the best dog for you.

AABR covers an area throughout the Northeast USA.   You can decide how far you are willing to travel to meet an available dog, but the states currently included in our program are:  Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The Wait...  

Yes you are excited to have decided to add a boxer to your home.  Please take this time to read some of the training articles on our site, puppy/dog proof your home, socialize your children with friend's pets, and socialize any current pets with other animals if not already done so. 

And please allow us at least a week or so before requesting status.  These status requests take us away from reviewing your Applications and matching you with dogs.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, you can advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com , or better still, let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for. 

Until you tell us otherwise, we will continue to review your application for possible matches with dogs coming into rescue.  However, we encourage you to return to our site frequently to view new additions to the available dogs list.  We ask that you notify us if you adopt a dog from another source so we can remove your application from our active file.  

3.  Arrange for a home-visit.
A boxer rescue volunteer will ask to visit you in your home, in all likelihood bringing a boxer along for the visit.  The boxer may or may not be an animal that you are interested in adopting.  The intent is to confirm that you do have a physical environment that is safe for a boxer and that you are comfortable with the breed in your home.

4. Finding the right boxer.
Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. And not all applicant's are suitable for matching with our "available dogs". 

On average, it takes between a week and 1 month for an approved applicant to adopt a Rescue Boxer, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.  For example; If you are looking for a young female, who is good with other dogs, cats, and small kids, please know that yours may be a harder application to fill.  Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.  

5. Getting your boxer.
AABR volunteers spend many hours a week picking up and transporting the dogs to safety.  We will certainly try to work with adopters if possible in getting their new family member, but we hope that if a home is committing to an animal for the the rest of it's life, (up to about 12 to 13 yrs depending on the age of the dog at adoption), then hopefully a few hours spent traveling to get the dog would not be too much to ask.

6.  Sign an adoption contract.
 When we have found a dog you want to adopt, you will be required to sign an adoption contract.  Basically, it requires you to agree to these major points: an agreement to neuter if it is not already done because of age or health, keeping current with medical needs, humane treatment, and the return of an unwanted dog back to the rescue program.

7. There is an adoption fee of $375. This donation helps to defer  the cost of veterinary care that we give the dogs, such as neutering, vaccinations, and medical treatments as needed. (Raised on 09/01/08 because it was not covering the costs of the basic care each boxer gets)

9.  Live happily ever after.
Yes, this is our goal.  We ask that you notify and work with us immediately if any issues arise. It does take a few weeks to a few months for a dog to settle into it's new home and bond with it's new pack. 

If, for some reason, the placement is not working out, Adopt A Boxer Rescue will accept the dog's return to our rescue program.  We ask you to work with us in returning the dog to rescue, and we try our best, but not all matches work out.  If that is the case, we will try to find you a rescue dog better suited to your family.

Forgive us if there is sometimes a delay in getting back to your inquiries.  We are all volunteers doing our best to meet the demands of our own lives, families and jobs, in addition to helping these dogs.  If you feel that your email or application has been overlooked, it is quite possible that email or server problems deleted it accidentally.  Try again!
