On November 8th 2003, we went to see a
female boxer named Chloe. She was two years old and was in a foster
home. We fell in love with her instantly. What was supposed to be just a
meet and greet ended with Chloe coming home with us. How could we resist
that beautiful boxer face, the kisses she gave so generously, and that
boxer wiggle? That was the first day of so many happy years with our
Chloe girl. She loved everyone she met, especially the kids - as she
could easily reach them to give kisses. Chloe was happiest when she was
with us, no matter what we were doing. Whether that was following behind
as we cut the grass, checking to make sure we didn't drop anything while
cooking, or just a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood. As long as
she was with us, she was content. Although chasing squirrels was a close
second.
Chloe's health had been failing. But
she was still happy, still loved to go for walks (short ones), and
still ate her breakfast and dinner with gusto. We showered her with even
more love and kept her as comfortable as we could. She wasn't ready to go
and we weren't ready to lose her. On Saturday, June 9th, we were together
all day. We went for a car ride, went for a very short walk, and
gave Chloe lots of loving. At the end of the day, we helped her up on the
couch (her favorite spot). Within minutes, we knew something was wrong.
Chloe was ready to go. We held her and kissed her as she slipped away
from us.
Someone once asked us if we knew what
Chloe stood for. They said "Christ Holds
Love Over Everything".
That was what our Chloe meant to us, she was the love of our life.
