About Allie – A Love Story

Allie arrived in March of 2002.  As soon as I saw her, I knew she would change my life… and she did.  Things that were easy or normal for most dogs weren’t so easy for Allie.  It was almost three weeks before she would wag her tail, and about eight weeks before she picked up her first toy.  She spent a good part of her waking hours, staring up at the ceiling, as if it was about to fall in on her.  Her eyes were dark and lifeless.  She had a rough beginning… A police officer rescued her from a backyard in South Carolina. Chained to a tree for years, Allie was starved and made to have litter after litter of puppies.

Allie was then only 37 lbs., was Heart Worm positive, and had hook and whip worms.  It took two series of treatments to get rid of her Heart Worms, and several treatments to get rid of the hook and whip worms.  She also had a mammary tumor and therefore was not spayed yet.

Along the way I noticed some uncontrollable trembling and jerking of her upper body.  I took her to two different neurologists where she had several tests, including muscle and kidney biopsies.  We still have no diagnosis for why this is happening.  It took a year of trying different meds, including prednisone and anadrol, (an anabolic steroid), to build her up enough to make it possible to remove her tumor and spay her.  Along with the meds she was getting 3 to 4 meals a day of chicken, steak and hamburger.  She would not eat, and lost weight, without the prednisone.

Finally, last month, when she reached 50 Lbs, Allie went in for her surgery.  She was spayed, had a very bad dew claw removed, and her tumor was removed.  I am grateful to say it was not malignant.

Hopefully she is on her way to recovery.  We are finished with surgeries and I am going to let her continue to live (and lounge) on my bed and on the couch where she has made herself comfortable for the past year.  She stares up at the ceiling, a little less these days, and is now enjoying her dog brothers (Willi, Ben and Chuck).  She also is enjoying her toys and running in our yard.

It has been a long hard year for the two of us but there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.

With all she has been through in her life, it is amazing that she is the most loving animal I have ever had. She loves to be held, kissed and mushed.  That’s just fine with me because I love to hold and kiss and mush her!

03/28/03 - Ally New Pics

Last week, Ally had her mammary tumor removed, and also was spayed.  She is still restricted in her activities, but has snuck in a few joyful runs in the back yard when she thought her mom wasn't watching.  We will update in another few days, on her progress.

01/19/03 - Update and New Pics

Ally, aka Scooby, has been in long term care and recuperating on Long Island for the past 10 months.

Ally has come a long way since being rescued, by a police officer in South Carolina, last winter.  She is still struggling with her health.  She has been treated for Heart Worms and Pin worms.  After two treatments, Ally was finally declared free of Heart Worms in October.  She still has a mammary tumor that has not been removed, and Ally has not yet been spayed, awaiting an improvement in her health.   She is now being treated by a veterinary neurologist for muscle twitches, and loss of weight.

On a good note, every day Ally seems to be coming more and more out of her shell.  She still spends too much time, staring up at the ceilings, but now she can play with her three brothers, Willie, Chuck, and Ben.  (Exercise was restricted while she had Heart Worm.)  She loves to snuggle on the couch or bed with her foster Mom, and has a favorite stuffed pig toy that she loves to play with.  And she is starting to put some weight on with the help of some very expensive daily medication.

Ally did not have an easy start to life, and she still has quite a ways to go.  Her vet expenses are approaching  $3000 and counting.  You can help offset the cost of Ally's care and recuperation, by sponsoring her.

2/24/02 - Ally-Sheba is in desperate need of your help. A police officer saw her tied in a backyard in South Carolina. She was in such bad condition that the animal control officer removed her from the home. She was extremely underweight. He had never seen a dog thinner then she was. All were concerned she would not make it.

Sheba is now safe in Massachusetts.  Her problem now is she is heartworm positive. Our vet treated her this past week and now she needs a foster or forever home to recuperate in. Sheba needs a quiet environment for 6 more weeks.

The pictures of Sheba were taken in the home she was brought to before her treatment. She had gained a good amount of weight in the 2 months she was there. Unfortunately they cannot take her back because of a family health issue. Sheba is still at our veterinarian's office. If you can help Sheba please e-mail the contact below.

If you would like to help this dog but cannot foster or adopt her, please help by donating.  Even the smallest donation will help offset the expense of her care and recuperation.
