Dempsey's owners sent some information about her
PERSONALITY:
Dempsey is very sweet, affectionate, and playful. She kisses on command and
loves attention. If you lie down, she’ll most
likely come along and lie down with you. She is also very protective
of her home, so when someone knocks on the door, she’s up and barking.
I have two grandsons, ages 3
and 1. She loves both of them when
they come to visit. She licks then incessantly. If they have food in
their hands, they will feed her and she is very gentle taking it from
them. I’ve seen the 3 year old shove the food half down the dog’s
throat and then take it out again. She just gives him the look like,
“what happened to my treat?” Also, she should not be allowed to
be around small dogs. She grew up with our small dogs, but she
is becoming too aggressive with them
She has had $1,200 worth of
professional training. She knows sit,
down, stay, come, give me paw (shake) and give me other paw
(shake).
She also knows hand signals for stay, down, up, etc. The only way I
can get her to do any commands, is to have a treat in my hand.
She’ll do anything for a treat!
You can put a cracker on the floor in front of her
and tell her to stay. As long as you are there, she won’t touch that
cracker until you say “okay”. It’s easy to train her as she loves
treats and praise.
LAP DOG? She grew up with 3 small dogs
(she was their size at 8 weeks old when we got her) and she still thinks she
is small. So, don’t be surprised when you’re sitting in a chair or on the
couch, and she climbs up into your lap and lies down in your lap. She will
also lie next to you too and put her face in your lap.
SLEEPING HABITS:
Dempsey has been used to sleeping with us
under the covers. It’s your call as to where you want her to sleep but
just know that she has been used to sleeping with us. She has also
has been used to lying on the furniture.
BATHROOM HABITS: Dempsey goes out in the
morning around 7 AM. After her breakfast, I usually put her out again for a
minute or two. (See eats around 9AM). She doesn’t go out again until
approx. noon or 12:30 p.m. I put her out again after her dinner which is at
4:30 p.m. She goes out again around 7:30 or 8PM and lastly around 11PM.
She also loves to sit outside in the yard when it is nice. When she has to
go to the bathroom, she will usually go to the door and then turn around and
look at you. If you’re going out somewhere and you want her to go to the
bathroom before you leave, let her out and tell her to “tinkle and poop”
She will tinkle on command and poop of she has to.
WEATHER:
Dempsey loves the snow. She jumps around in it like a little
fawn and loves to chase after snowballs. Although she
likes water from a hose, she’s not fond of rain and doesn’t like to go
out in it. So on rainy days, we looked for “windows of opportunity” to
let her out. She doesn’t mind a light rain or drizzle, but if she hasn’t
been out for a while and it stops raining for a minute or two, I make
her go out and then tell her to tinkle and poop, which she will do on
command (the tinkle, that is). She has never been afraid of thunder
and lightning but is slightly skittish when it comes to fireworks, but
not freaked out. She has never been allowed to roam free or walk
without a leash. Our backyard is fenced in and she has been used
to playing and doing her business there. She loves to go for long
walks (not on hot, humid days).
CAR/TRUCK RIDES:
Nothing pleases her more than to ride
shotgun in the car/truck. She loves being driven around. I don’t let
her stick her head out the window because it dries her eyes and
nasal passages too much.
3/14/05 -
Dempsey
Dempsey is a beautiful 69 pound brindle girl. She is not
getting along with the other much smaller dogs in her house. Dempsey plays
OK with dogs of her own size. We will place her with a submissive large male
or as an only dog.
Dempsey is well behaved and housebroken.
