08/27/05 - Update from foster dad
"Callie is showing real
improvement as she has really taken to my wife. She sleeps at the foot of
the couch with her foster mom in the evenings and just recently started
sleeping overnight next to my wife's side of the bed. Even though she is
still somewhat intimidated by me (the only male in the house), she has made
strides by taking treats from my hand, coming through doors when I'm holding
them, and getting all excited when it is time for our daily walks. She's
learning how to walk on a leash very quickly and she really enjoys her time
in our yard, chasing the rabbits and playing with our older boxer.
She's becoming a very
sweet and lovable dog and will make someone very happy with all the love she
has to give back. Her house accidents are few and far between now that we
are settling into a routine. She even gives big licks to our 9-month old
daughter, who likes to use Callie as a way to stand up. Of course our
daughter still tumbles right down when Callie moves away from the action,
but Callie does seem to enjoy the baby.
We are having a lot of
fun watching this wonderful girl mature and learn so quickly."

Callie is making strides as she adjusts to living with people in
a "normal" household with two adults, two cats, another female boxer, and a
nine-month old baby girl. Initially, she was just frightened of everyone
and everything, but she now feels safest huddling behind my wife and is
still only afraid of me, the male in the house. She has slowly shown signs
of improvement by taking a treat from my hand or allowing me to escort her
by her collar around the house. She skitters quickly through doorways when
I am behind her, but I always try to speak in quiet and soothing tones to
her and she has gotten better with me. She has quickly adapted to her
crate, where she spends part of the day and where she sleeps at night. We
walk together every evening, trying to get her acclimated to being on a
leash. She is like a three year old, 60 lb. puppy, as she just doesn't know
how the people world functions. But she is beautiful and loving. I bathed
her recently and she was better with it than most other dogs. She appears
to be very healthy and she loves to have her ears scratched while we watch
TV at night. She has shown a few signs of wanting to play with our boxer
and they have briefly chased each other around the yard. My wife has even
seen a few butt wiggles, but she won't do that around me just yet. Callie
will make a wonderful companion for someone. She has shown absolutely no
aggression toward any human or animal and once she learns to trust all of
us, she'll blossom into a wonderful dog.

Callie
This sweet girl was picked up as a stray wandering the country roads of
Lancaster County. She has a good disposition but is very frightened right
now. She needs a good home that will let her chill out and relax and
begin to trust humans again.
If you are that home please tell AABR you can help Callie trust again.
As soon as we know more about her we will update you! Since she was a stray
she will only be placed with older children over 12 years.
