Every once in awhile, the realization of how important rescue is creeps up
on us without warning. So it is with Mikey, AABR’s bulldog. With a face
‘to die for’ we knew we had to get him out of the over-crowded high-kill
shelter that picked him up as a stray. What you can’t see from his picture
is the terror and fear that greets you when you first meet Mikey. There is
no doubt that prior to becoming a stray, Mikey was severely abused – if you
walk directly toward him, Mikey will run into a corner, make his body as
small as possible, and hide his head and face. His fear was so crippling
that he had to be carried to the car and then into the house. I cannot
imagine the coward that treated this amazingly sweet boy so cruelly that the
very sight of a person walking toward him makes Mikey cringe in fear. We
also do not believe that Mikey knows what the inside of a home is – he saw
and heard the television and was so terrified of it that he hit the wall
trying to run away from ‘the evil box’.
Don’t let what you just read discourage you – it
doesn’t discourage Mikey! For the first few hours Mikey just lay down and
watched and waited. Of course having 2 other boxers and a cat in the house
helped ease Mikey’s fears – he’s very happy having 4-legged company! And as
the hours passed and Mikey got used to hearing a kind voice, he slowly came
over and lay down at my feet. Yesterday morning, Mikey went out for a walk
with his new boxer friends. And after breakfast, Mikey was relaxed enough
to wag his tail when he heard his name. Today is day 2 of Mikey’s journey
in rescue. He’s eating well, is becoming less frightened when you enter the
room and last night, he slept in bed with his foster dad AND he cuddled –
how’s that for amazing progress!!
AABR is starting Mikey back on the road toward trust
and he’s doing great! Our goal is to find Mikey that great home that will
return all the love that this sweet boy wants so much to give.

Mikey
Mikey came from the NY city shelter system. We went to get a Boxer but when
we met Mikey how could we resist rescuing this ADORABLE Boxer Bulldog mix.
We
will post better pictures and update Mikey's page as soon as his
foster home gets to know him.
Mikey is
underweight and is very scared right now. With time we can correct both of
these problems.
