Meet precious precious Emma. I picked her up 3 days ago just a few
hours after her spay surgery. She was able to rest and recuperate at home
with us. She had been abandoned at the Humane League of Lancaster County
(PA). She recently weaned a litter of pups but her owners were finished
using her little body and she got the boot! In Lancaster County, Emma was
a very fortunate girl, a lot of the 'used' females are not lucky enough to
make it to a shelter. It is a gross understatement to say Emma's life so
far has not been the one she deserves.
It is quite clear that Emma has never seen the inside of a house - stairs,
TVs, carpeting were all foreign to her. The rough spots on her elbows are
indicative of having been kept in a tiny inhumane space (as is common at
puppy mills). She favors walking on pavement and gravel to grass. And
when I offered her a cushy dog bed she looked at it and laid next to it.
Once I coaxed her onto it, she was sold! Emma had not seen human affection
before her trip to Eagle Kennel, Ludwigs Corner Vet and here with us. She
welcomes our love but she is not sure she is worthy of all of the
attention we give her.
She responded very very well to my husbands voice and to him in general.
She must have been in contact with men in her former life. She is
exploring quietly and becoming more and more comfortable with the
amenities we offer- heat! fresh water! and love! Just this morning, she
figured out how to go up the stairs, and she is getting more and more
courageous about going down! She is learning that the green stuff in the
back yard is a fun place!
Emma is currently living with a 6 year old male Boxer, and two cats. She
is the quietest and least demanding one of the bunch! She has a heart of
gold and so much love behind her eyes. I told her that she hit the
lottery when her owner dropped her at that shelter. It was the luckiest
day of her life so far, but I know the luckiest of all is in front of her.
