Look at Baxter now! His hair has filled in and he looks so handsome.  He is still a little timid around people, but LOVES other dogs and is much more outgoing when another dog is around. He is very well-behaved and gentle.

Baxter needs a home with lots of love to build his confidence and another dog to play with would be great.  He is such a sweetheart!

4/8/06 - Baxter

This is the story of a stray dog and a HERO who saved him.

Can you imagine going on vacation and seeing this dog on the street. That is what happened to our hero. She delayed coming home and made sure Baxter was treated and then flown to NY.

Baxter was a stray boxer living on the streets of Puerto Rico. A friend of AABR, who was on business there, found him roaming the streets near her hotel and knew she had to help him. He was in terrible condition, emaciated and frightened. To save Baxter, she missed her flight back to the U.S., but she knew his life was much more important (thank you Cindy for rescuing Baxter.) He was brought to a vet and she had him temporarily boarded in Puerto Rico until she could arrange his flight to the U.S. We picked him up at the airport and he was absolutely terrified to come out of his crate. Who can blame him? Too bad we had no way to tell him how great his life would be now. He is being treated for Demodex mange (a non-contagious skin condition) which looks awful, but is curable over a relatively short period of time. In fact, his hair seems to be growing back and we expect he will have a beautiful coat in no time.

Through it all this guy has the most wonderful temperament. He is in a foster home with 2 Weimeraners and a cat and is doing fantastic. He loves to play with other dogs and is fine with the cat. When I went to the foster home to visit him, Baxter was ready to play and followed my Boxer around the yard like it was his long lost friend. He's a little shy around people, but warms up quickly and does the classic boxer wiggle. He is extremely sweet, calm and gentle.

Won't you please help this poor soul. He's been through so much. He needs a home where he will always be loved and never need to worry about being homeless or hungry again.

P.S.  I was told by a woman at the airport who was also picking up a dog to rescue that Puerto Rico has a terrible problem with strays (worse than us).  They are everywhere and often hang out in the tourist areas and parks so they will get fed.   And it doesn't help that the culture on many Islands just doesn't respect and embrace these dogs as pets.   They often die or are euthanized.

My experience on vacation has been to see so many pregnant females, puppies, and unaltered males on beaches begging for food. It always broke my heart but I never helped by bringing one home. Thanks to Cindy, she really saved Baxter's life!!!!!
