08/09/09 Elvis has now been with us
for the past year and has had one heck of a time! All the time my husband
and I have spent loving, nurturing, training and socializing him has been so
much fun and very enlightening- we are amazed that he was once a dog that
was thrown away, abandoned and abused... but he's still always looking for a
better life- never has Elvis given up or thrown in the towel, even when he
was frightened and scared about what the future might hold, so we have made
a commitment to him that we will never give up looking for his perfect
family.
In the last year we've gotten to know and LOVE him for all he
is...Energetic, Loving, Vigilant, Intriguing, Silly- that's just a few
things about our ELVIS! He's trusted us through so much- visits to the vet,
to the UPENN behaviorists, at public outreach events, and now through one
more and especially beneficial chapter of ! his life- his time at the
Perfect Pooch training camp. Even though Elvis's confidence and reliability
around new people has improved leaps and bounds, it can never hurt to keep
the challenges coming, so Elvis spent 14 days in a doggie resort/psychology
center/boot camp. Of course he quickly won over everyone there, including
the 40 dogs he played with on a daily basis. You can see how happy he was in
the play yard, so we'll be sending him there on a regular basis for
continued training and playtime. The owner of Perfect Pooch, and all the
trainers, are offering free training for Elvis's new home, so you can learn
how to be a GREAT dog owner to Elvis, and at no cost to you.
No doubt, Elvis needs someone ready to step up to the plate - we did as
his foster home and we're so much better for it. We know you will feel great
by saving the life of this very needy and very worthy boy. Adopt him and
make him your buddy, your best friend and your loyal partner- he's ready to
give you 110% of himself.

Elvis is still with me in
foster care now after 9 months- That's far too long for a dog to be without
a forever home! Well actually Elvis has been without a forever home for
about 2 years and he's coming up on 4 years old soon! He's doing very, very
well here, learning how to accept new people in the house and going on long
hikes weekly. He is perfect walking on trails past people and other dogs-
give a simple "leave it" to him and he's full steam head, ready for the next
turn. I'd love to see Elvis in an experienced dog home with no children or
other dogs (a cat or two that minds its business would be fine) that will
love and accept him for who he is. He was an abused and abandoned boxer that
simply does what experience has told him to be right- to not trust strangers
right away. Over time, he relaxes and you will get to meet the dog I hang
out with every day, and the time that takes is SO WORTH IT! Apply today.

Update
- Last month Elvis and I had the pleasure to visit with the top behaviorists
in the country at the University of Pennsylvania. They were very happy to
help Elvis, giving me lots of easy training tips to use to help him
acclimate better to new folks, which gives him an overall greater sense of
security in his daily life. Along with training trips, they gave us a mild
mood stabilizer to try out and it’s been working well. The pills are very
inexpensive and have been a valuable resource in aiding Elvis’s
rehabilitation. This wonderful boy has been in rescue far too long and needs
loving, committed owners to take him under their wing and give him the life
he needs and deserves.
Because he can be insecure in situations involving new people, he would
love owners that like to stay at home with their pooch in their spare time
and don’t have that many visitors. When guests do visit, he does very well
baby-gated in the adjacent room with a frozen peanut butter Kong. He feels a
part of the group, without the pressure of worrying about everyone paying
lots of attention to him. Elvis enjoys his daily walk, then his daily sprint
around the yard and really likes his life to have structure and routine to
it. He’s a great, fabulous, loving and affectionate dog to those he knows
and trusts so become part of our “inner circle” and apply for him!

Update
- Here are some new pictures of Elvis! He's being a very good boy here in
foster care, but would love a home of his own for the holidays. Some place
quiet, low key and with people that will love him forever! If you have any
questions about Elvis, please contact me!

Well
Elvis has been with us in our quiet suburban home for six weeks and is doing
great. I have learned all I could about his background and it's a very sad
one. Elvis is an insecure dog that has had a rough life up until now. I
cannot say with 100% certainty that he was abused but I would be amazed if
he wasn't. Whether that abuse was physical, or was simply in the form of
ignoring him and not socializing him properly to the world, he is still
impacted daily by it. But Elvis is a dog, which means he is ready to move on
to a happier way of life, so that is what we are focusing on every day.
Elvis is such a happy boy when he feels secure and safe. He would love a
home in the country, away from the hustle and bustle, with a large area for
him to run and play in. He loves walking through creeks and romping around
in the woods! He is looking for humans that are sympathetic and
understanding of his past, yet have a desire to help him become more
confident with new things, at his own pace. Elvis is a goof-ball that is
guaranteed to make you laugh every minute of every day!! Once you have
gained his trust, his unconditional love, affection and loyalty are traits
to be admired. He just has this way of making you feel very special. When he
looks at you, it's easy to see the love pouring out and that he wants to do
whatever your heart desires. He's extremely obedient and his desire to learn
is high. This big boy has a heart of gold and the lucky family that adopts
him will have a dog they can truly call "our dog" for life. Until then he'll
be here, seeing new sights and meeting new people all the time, on the road
to mental and spiritual recovery.

I am
totally and completely in love with “the king”, Elvis the boxer!! This 80+
lbs., 2.5 year old boxer boy with natural ears and tail, and maybe the
softest fur I’ve ever felt, has the kindest heart and just really, really
wants a forever home that will love him unconditionally. He aims to please
in every way possible and couldn’t be a more obedient dog. He knows sit,
down, leave it and come and always obeys. On top of that he’s totally house
trained and crate trained and gets along so well with my two cats and female
boxer. He’s very playful but also knows how to relax and lay around- napping
is his second favorite thing to do next to mealtime!!
Although he is great playing with other animals, I would like to see
Elvis in a home as the only pet. His instinct to guard his food
from other animals (but not people) is strong. If you have friends with
dogs, he’s the perfect playmate!!
We have also found that Elvis needs new people to go slowly with him. It
took him about 5 minutes to get used to me before he was laying the kisses
on thick! But I did it right, making sure not to break the trust I was
trying to gain from him. When I first met Elvis, he took one look at me and
his tail went between his legs and if he could have ran away, he would have.
So my strategy was, frankly, to ignore him and it worked like a charm! I let
him sniff me when he felt ready and it didn’t take long at all for his
curiosity of me to kick in. I made sure to let him know that I was no threat
to him at all because I didn’t look at him, talk to him or touch him until
after he showed interest in me first. I then gave him some treats and
because he then knew he could trust me, he’s been my best friend from that
moment on.
He now looks to me for direction, listens so well and solicits pets from
me all the time. Trust is a powerful thing! Elvis is constantly showing me
his belly for rubs and I can touch him absolutely anywhere, even checking
his teeth and tugging on his tail.
I can't say enough about how great Elvis is. Saving him and making him a
part of your family will be the most rewarding thing you ever do, so get
your application in today!!

My name
is Elvis, and I am the king. I am quite a big guy who loves to cuddle and
snuggle whenever possible, and I quickly become attached to the humans in my
world once I get used to them. I'm a little scared until the moment you
touch my head in a kind way, then I love you forever. I'm just getting
started on training, although someone else taught me some tricks a while
ago. For example, even though I know how to stay, sometimes I'm really
excited and have a hard time concentrating to my best ability. I'm well
behaved on walks although other dogs do grab my attention. I'm excellent in
a crate, and can even outshine my foster siblings by lying down and waiting
quietly (he doesn't have to remind me) for my Foster dad to let me out. My
foster family loves me very much. They say my head feels like velvet, which
makes sense because I am Elvis. Did I mention that I love food with a
passion? If you're as big as I am, I guess it goes without saying. If you
have room in your heart and home, I'll be happy to brighten your kingdom.
Not sure with cats- gets along with 2 in the foster home, but chases the
3rd. It often depends on the cat.
11/15/07 In foster
Update - Elvis has arrived in a new foster home, and he's making himself
right at home. This big baby spent a long time in a kennel, due to a lack of
foster homes, and he's
adjusting to the comforts of home. He's a sweet young boy with a lot
of love to give. We will update you soon on how he is doing in his foster
home... You won't be disappointed!

- Angel and Elvis
Here is the dynamic mother and son combo,
Angel and Elvis. According to the owner the dogs accidentally were let out
of the gate by contractors and ran loose in the neighborhood until they were
picked up and taken to the shelter. It was all downhill from there. These
two were frightened beyond description, especially Elvis. They were kept in
their pen for a month. They were found by AABR and rescued in a nick
of time as they were going to be euthanized. The two were brought here to my
kennel and after a long walk were put in the play yard. You could just see
the anxiety melt away, what a joy to behold. I was nervous at how they would
be the next day as they were once again in a kennel pen. I didn't have to
worry because two happy wiggly boxers greeted me in the morning. These guys
are perfect, very devoted to each other as only a mother and son can be. (we
moms can relate) Wouldn't it be wonderful to find a home where they don't
have to be separated? You wouldn't have to worry about the dogs not getting
along....one obstacle removed already. Is your heart big enough to hold both
these sweet souls?

by clicking on the link at the top of this page,
then fill out an
online application.
Boxers and Applicants
are not matched on a first come, first served basis.
Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes
between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an
approved applicant, depending
on your personal circumstances and flexibility.
Matching Boxers suitable for placement
with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special
needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review
time and adoption time.
And yes, we
realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted
before you're approved. Should your first choices all ready
found their forever home, we want you to advise
us as to other dogs you are interested in at
Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com . Or let
us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.
That is what we are good at. And be happy for the
ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many
fantastic dogs waiting in their place.
Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful
Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a
