01/24/09 HAPPY - Memorial -
Passed on - 01/19/09
I regret to inform everyone that Happy passed away yesterday. He started to
decline very rapidly over the last couple of days and could not be helped
anymore. We did everything we could for him. Even though it is very sad
that Happy didn't survive very long under our care, at least he was able to
have almost 2 months of a normal, loving life. Again, I do not regret
pulling him from the city shelter. No other rescue would, and AABR (thank
you Dawn!) stepped in and gave it all we had. That is something to feel
very proud about, and I know if Happy could speak, he would be thanking us
for trying our best to save him when no one else would.
And now it is time to thank Happy for entering our lives and teaching us
what it is like to live happily, holding no grudges or resentment towards
people, despite the way he was treated pre-rescue. He did not have a good
life pre-rescue, yet continued to be happy and loving regardless of his past
ill treatment. Happy truly touched many of our hearts in the short time
that we had him. He was such a joyful, loving dog.
Thank you to Carey Knight who provided him with a loving foster home
through December. And thank you to the staff at Springhouse Animal
Hospital, especially Kortney and Dr. Liz, who really were supportive in our
efforts to do everything we could for this sweet boy, and took him under
their wing and into foster care over the past month.
He made some wonderful human and dog friends over the past couple of
months, who helped him physically and emotionally over some major bumps in
the road.
Rest in peace sweet Happy and thank you for teaching us so much.

Happy was seized from a cruelty case in Philadelphia, PA. When Happy was
seized from his former owners he had no food, no water, was completely
dehydrated, and lacked control of his hindquarters. His owner claimed to
"never notice" the wobble in his back legs or how thin he was. Without any
remorse, the owner willingly allowed the PSPCA to take him.
The PSPCA saved Happy’s life when they seized him that day. His depleted
body was nourished with IV fluids. Slowly, Happy gained strength, and he
spent the next two months at PSCPA as his case was worked. As the
Thanksgiving holiday came close PSPCA put out a plea to local boxer rescues
to find Happy another organization to take over his care and help him find
the new and better life he deserves. Four boxer rescues were contacted –
Only AABR would take him in.
On Wednesday, December 3rd Happy’s life was saved for a second time.
AABR welcomed Happy into our organization. This week Happy met his third
lifesaver - a premier, board certified neurologist who evaluated the wobble
in his legs. The doctor suspects that there are two separate blockages in
his spinal column which are causing his loss of position in his legs. The
good news is, Happy certainly doesn’t seem to mind. He’s in no pain, and
simply wants to live life to the fullest.
Happy is looking for a foster or forever home that has primary living
residence on one floor. He would prefer carpeting as it makes it easier for
him to keep his legs underneath him. Happy would love to have a fenced in
yard where he would be allowed to romp and play! He’d also like to go for
walks in the park or go swimming as part of his ongoing physical therapy.
Happy is reported to be good with dogs and cats. He is also currently living
in a temporary foster home with a 15 year old who he adores (although we do
not have any further child history on him).
Happy is an amazingly sweet and kind dog. He’s gentle and loving.
Amazing after all he’s been through! His disposition will allow him to fit
into almost any home. This holiday season Happy hopes that you might
consider opening your heart and being his hero! Won’t you please consider
fostering or adopting this wonderful boy? He’s stolen the hearts of so many
at AABR already, and we know that if you give him a chance, he’ll steal
yours too!
