We love Lucy... What a great attitude she has.
Look at how she
takes it in stride when her bossy feline roommate tries to get between her
and dinner:
what a good girl she is in the elevator despite the grumpy little Yorkie
who nipped at her for no reason at all a few minutes before this was taken:
and how much love she has to give.

Lucy has done brilliantly in foster care.
She will cuddle with you while you read or watch TV, or prance happily on
long walks if that's your pleasure. She showed her cheerful personality
even when she was emaciated and always thirsty because of her diabetes. She
is exceptionally well-trained in following instructions and going outside
when she needs to. Just look at her lovely expressions and beautiful fawn
coat! She sits obediently for her twice-daily insulin shot, which easily
controls her diabetes and takes only a minute. Her cheerful smile has
returned as she regained most of her lost weight. She curls magnificently to
greet you, and is exceptionally responsive to commands – sit, give paw,
come. In fact she always tries to figure out what you want even before you
know! She immediately makes friends with every one – from the shelter
people to the vet to her foster family. She tries to play with the aloof
resident cat in her foster home.
She spent this past Saturday at an adoption event in Stamford CT and proved
to be a real crowd pleaser. At one point there were more than 5 kids
surrounding her, giving her attention and she was very well behaved with all
of them. She was gentle with everyone from a baby to an elderly lady that
was quite taken with her. She was not too fond of the puppies at Petsmart
jumping all over her but a quick bark gave them the signal that she does not
care for the rough and tumble play of puppydom. Everyone that met her
commented on how calm and well behaved she is (she sat on her foster mom's
lap for most of the afternoon) and how adorable her "sad eyes" are. We
assured them that this pup may still have the sad eyes but she is a
completely different dog than the one that made it out of the shelter barely
alive. She is full of life and happy as a clam.
Adopt Lucy if you want an intelligent, obedient, and loving dog that
requires minimal effort in her care.

- Lucy
Its been a rough time for everyone recently, but our 4-5 year old boxer mix
Lucy has had an especially rough few weeks. She was brought into a NYC
shelter as a stray on Christmas Eve. On her intake it noted that she was
extremely emaciated, dehydrated and had a distended stomach. Over the next 3
weeks she was continually looked over for adoption. Her medical records also
continued to report that these conditions persisted. She became very
depressed.
The shelter workers took a special liking to her and tried many
avenues to get Lucy adopted. She was "Pet of the Week" for the Canarsie
Courier and she has been on Craigs list in every major city in the
northeast. Sadly no one came forward to help her despite her glowing
description which specifically noted that Lucy was "healthy according to our
medical staff.".
Finally an AABR volunteer saw the ad and inquired about
her. Within 24 hours she was safe in a NYC foster home. Unfortunately the
worst was still to come. Within 10 minutes in her new foster home it was
evident that this dog was far from healthy. She could barely lift her head
and was desperately seeking water everywhere... even climbing in the tub and
licking the faucet. As many dogs drink a lot as a sign of stress we decided
to wait a day to see if this persisted. Unfortunately it did and an
emergency hospitalization confirmed that she has Diabetes Mellitus, which is
the insulin dependent kind. The shelter had apparently not noticed this and
she had been without her insulin for at least 3 weeks, probably more. She
had become so dehydrated she was near death.
Lucy was immediately started on
insulin and IV fluids. Although she is still very sad she is in good hands
now. In the short time she was in her foster home Lucy demonstrated that she
is housebroken and very well mannered. Through this entire ordeal she has
been nothing but sweet with every human and animal she met. She is a bit
shy, but thrives on attention. A few hours after arriving she was curled up
and sleeping in her foster mom's lap. It is sad that such an easily
treatable disease has almost taken this poor girl's life. Once stabilized
all she will probably need is one insulin shot a day! We will do all the
hard work of getting her stabilized, after that she will be easy and
inexpensive to take care of.
AABR is doing literally everything
we can to ensure that she never experiences neglect again. She is stealing
the hearts of everyone she meets, hopefully she can steal yours.

by clicking on the link at the top of this page,
then fill out an
online application.
Boxers and Applicants
are not matched on a first come, first served basis.
Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes
between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an
approved applicant, depending
on your personal circumstances and flexibility.
Matching Boxers suitable for placement
with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special
needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review
time and adoption time.
And yes, we
realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted
before you're approved. Should your first choices all ready
found their forever home, we want you to advise
us as to other dogs you are interested in at
Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com. Or let
us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.
That is what we are good at. And be happy for the
ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many
fantastic dogs waiting in their place.
Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful
Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a
Boxer.
We hope you feel that
the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
