02/28/09 - Memorial

Amazon passed on last night.  I picked him up at the shelter, and right away I could tell something was really really wrong.  They reported he had an enlarged heart, but they didn't really tell me anything else at the shelter.

He was breathing so heavily in the back seat of my car.....my own chest just started to hurt.....I knew I couldn't bring him to the kennel.  So I turned around and brought him to Glenolden Animal Hospital where thankfully they were able to see us right away.

Turns out, Amazon was in complete heart failure and filled with fluid.  He would have died alone tonight if I had brought him to the kennel with how sick he was.  So, I asked another volunteer to come and join us at the hospital, and we stuck by his side, petting him, telling him what a good boy he is, gave him a real tasty last meal, and he passed on peacefully and without struggle.

I didn't know Amazon for very long at all, but he certainly left his paw prints in my heart.  My heart breaks for these dogs that are sick like this and dumped at the shelter, and never make it out.  At least Amazon knew we were there for him.

02/27/09 - AMAZON

Meet Amazon a very friendly fawn 6 yr old, neutered male.  Dumped at the shelter because of his eye.  As you can see from the picture, he has a tumor on one of his eyes.  The owners had it removed before and the Dr. said it is benign.  It grew back.  We are waiting to hear if we can operate on it or not--he's having X-rays and blood work done today.

This boy is SWEET and amazingly calm in the shelter.  He was just snoozing away in his cage amongst all the chaos!  He was all wiggles and sweetness when I took him out--I really liked him.  He doesn't seem reactive to other dogs.  What a nice boy.

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
