03/01/09 -  8 PM - How Mickey was found

A good Samaritan who works for the Scranton Times, was driving home from work on the Interstate and saw a woman trying to catch a dog.  He swung around an exit and came back around onto the interstate and came upon Mickey about to jump off the interstate and down into a junkyard.   He yelled "hey buddy" and Mickey came back his way and rolled over onto his back for a belly rub.  Rich put Mickey into his car and went to find the woman.  She had driven away so he took Mickey home and called the police.  Rich found out that AABR was looking for a fawn boxer and gave us a call.

Many thanks go to the many volunteers who searched for Mickey, and for the good folks of Scranton for their help in looking for Mickey!

02/28/09 - Lost Dog!

Mickey backed out of his collar while on a walk with his foster dad.  He was in Nay Aug Park in Scranton PA. This happened at 4PM yesterday and volunteers have been out there searching.

02/17/09 -

This lucky dog's name is now Mickey, but he did not have a name just a short time ago. He was known as #688 at a high-kill, gassing shelter in NC. I came across his picture on the shelter's website while looking for another dog that I had received an urgent email on. When I saw that beautiful face I panicked. I had to save him. After contacting AABR, I was told that our rescue was full to the brim. We could only take him into rescue if I fostered him myself. Having 6 dogs of our own, we do not often foster. But, in order to save #688's life, we decided to commit.

A wonderful woman in NC offered to give him a foster home until he could get a transport to PA and get him to the vet and ready to go.

Arrangements for transport were not going too well and then I remembered hearing about a program called PilotsnPaws. This is a volunteer program through which pilots of small aircraft offer their services to transport rescue dogs from point A to point B. I went onto their website and created a post for Mickey the Gaston boxer. I received a response from a pilot who resides in our local area. He offered to make a few alterations to a flight plan to make it possible to pick up our boy THE VERY NEXT DAY!! We had to put a rush on his vetting, but his foster mom was willing to do whatever it took to get our dog on this plane for us. So Mickey was vetted early in the morning and on a flight to PA by early evening on the day on which he was scheduled to die in a gas chamber. We picked him up at our local airport and took him home. The co-pilot, Rick, who was my contact, said that it was a very RARE transport. He said that I should know that things do not usually fall into place so perfectly and that our Mickey is one very lucky boy!! Thanks to Carolina Boxer Rescue, Karen, Jeff and Rick for making this rescue a reality!

Update - Mickey is a little shy but warms up quickly once he knows that he can trust you. He is a little wary of new things but is slowly coming around. Mickey does the cutest thing with his front paws. He lifts one really high in the air when he gets comfortable with you like he is reaching for a friend. He is one of the sweetest boys that I have come across in doing rescue and would make someone a wonderful companion. He does very well in his crate.

We will send in an update when we get to know him a little bit better.

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.

Adoptions Fee: Please see our adoption info by clicking on the link at the top of this page.
