Sock Appeal a great Success!
Although Nick is doing well without his cart, any amount of rubbing on
his sore toes makes them bleed. We put out the word, for the need for
a lot of soft socks for Nick, so his foster mom could keep constantly
changing them, and boy did it work...
"Thanks
to Joanne, Charlotte and Dawn for all the socks! His feet are healing
so nicely that Nick is almost ready to start wearing boots to prevent the
sores recurring. Having looked at many stylish boots online, we've decided
to go with the same type of rubber boot that Clarissa's foster used and she
recommended. If anyone would like to make a donation towards Nick's boots
which are $24 for four plus shipping, please send via Paypal on the site or
mail a cheque to Dawn or Jamie. Nick said even loose change in your pockets
is appreciated because his surgery costs have already mounted up, any
extra will go towards bills already paid. Hopefully this dear little chap
will never have to suffer the pain of swollen sore footsies again. "

Nick is at a new foster
home which he will have for two weeks.
Here is what his new foster mom
is saying:
Here's
what I would add after having him at home for a few days:
Nick needs a home where someone is around to let him out to pee quite often,
otherwise he may have accidents and he can end up peeing on himself.
Nick
dribbles urine, he needs frequent washing, probably wiping with a wash cloth
several times a day to keep him fresh and free from secondary skin
infections. Possibly a belly band ( male diaper ) could help with this
issue. Sleeping in a plastic airline type crate is useful in case he can't
hold his pee.
He needs a grassy yard with little or no concrete as rough surfaces, even
decking can be like rubbing your knuckles on a cheese grater. He seems to do
well with female dogs and is flirty with the Frenchies though he could be an
only dog. It would be best if the other dog wasn't too exuberant as this
tends to wear Nicks toes raw too when they play ( unless he has socks on for
playtime) and play should be restricted to short sessions each day.
Bedding that drains and does not hold liquid is essential. Someone who loves
to nurse and fuss over animals and can pay attention to hygiene would be
ideal for Nick, who doesn't think he has a problem of course.
Sometimes when moving him to a car or from one surface to another, it's
better for Nick to just pick him up rather than him fall or tear his skin.
He's a tiny little guy and I can tuck him under one arm, no problem.
What you get from being with Nick: A dog who watches you patiently while you
tend to him, who seems to accept what you have to do for him. A happy little
camper despite his short comings. A dog who enjoys relaxing with you and is
openly affectionate. A little guy who is trying to make the best of what
life has handed him: he just needs the dedication of a person to make this
possible and we must find that person or family as soon as possible.

We had a great foster to
adopt home for Nick if we could just get the two male dogs to get along.
The home really tried hard and worked with our trainer, but it's just not
working out. They are broken hearted because Nick was doing so well
and he is a sweet dog.
We are in urgent need
of a foster home without another male dog. Nick has been having a
great time playing with the young submissive lab female in the home.
They wrestle and Nick really doesn't need his cart!!!!! He has even
been going up stairs in the home, and he's building up muscles in his back
legs!!!!
06/21/09 - Urgent foster or Adoptive home needed
Nick is in urgent need of a foster home or hopefully his forever home!
He has been living in a home with two other "cart dogs" and
gets along well with them. Sometimes their carts get caught, and
one of his siblings is very fragile, so this is a problem. Also, his mom has
had to travel more and more for her business. It is hard to find dog
sitters for all these dogs, and she feels Nick would be best with a family
that is home more often. It is very sad, but an urgent business trip
coming up will have Nick ending up in a kennel. This is not the best
situation for Nick, but we have no other alternative. That is, unless
someone steps up to help Nick.
About Nick:
A little over a year ago, Nick was found on the streets as a stray.
Nick was
rescued by a volunteer who picked this little guy up from the shelter and
got him to safety in the “nick” of time.
While at
the shelter, they reported he could not walk or stand properly.
We had a few specialist examine him and his diagnosis was that he had
a congenital malformation of his spine which alters his gait/movement from
being normal.
Nick had neurosurgery to relieve the pressure on his spinal cord by
decompressing the discs that were deformed.
If ever
there was a puppy that had a bigger heart or more spirit, you've yet to meet
him. This little boy had major surgery, been poked and prodded, and through
it all, he was just a little love bug.
Nick has come a long way since then.
He plays with
his toys, runs down the hallway and when he falls, his determination to
right himself is shown all over his beautiful little face. There is not a
boundary you can put in front of Nick that he will not conquer and the look
of satisfaction that he gets can only make you smile.
He
has a happy disposition and will make you laugh every day.
Nick loves to play fetch and go for walks. He
doesn’t need his “wheels” all of the time – mostly just for long walks and
outings – and his vet encouraged that Nick walk without his wheels as much
as possible so that he strengthens his leg muscles. Nick does
need someone to make sure he gets outside often to go do his business,
especially when he first wakes up. His mom is using a belly band on
Nick, to catch dribbles, and he
could be trained to use one of those indoor dog potties. Nick is very
smart!
Nick’s last home had two very young grandchildren (toddlers) and he adored
them. Please consider this sweet, fun-loving boxer to
become a member of your family. Will you be Nick's hero?
