10/4/09 - MEMORIAL

Flora passed away at the Cherry Ridge Vet Clinic on Sept. 28th 2009.  She was rescued by AABR in early July, and came home with us as a foster just a short time later. Picked up as a stray in Scranton with no identification, Flora was in need of immediate love and care. She was scared, underweight, and had a badly damaged left ear from what appears to have been a dog fight. There was also a large growth on one of her hind legs.

Flora was a spectacular dog right from the beginning. She was terrified of dog crates. Lucky for us she didn't need one (even with two cats in the house). She loved to snuggle, play with her treat ball, and play fetch with her rope toy. Mostly, she just wanted to be close to us and could always be found within a few feet of Bill and I. She was so sweet. Everyone that met her loved her.

Tragically, Flora had tumors that began making their appearance as soon as she started gaining weight. The tumors were stage 3. Despite major surgical efforts to remove the cancer, it continued to invade her body. The vet who did her surgeries reported he went as deep into the tissue as he could - but couldn't get all of it. From what he saw inside it was too late for chemo or other radical cancer treatments.

Aside from the tumors and  devastating prognosis, Flora recovered from her surgery and behaved like any robust boxer would...full of life and love!
When it was time for her pass on -she let me know. She was so wonderful and is deeply missed.

08/18/09 - Flora has had surgery...

So far over $1000 in medical bills.

Tumors were removed from her ears and neck. Flora's biopsies have not come back yet, but we will keep you updated as soon as we no more.

Wow. I don't know whether to laugh (head wrap) or cry. She has a head wrap on, a drainage tube sticking out of her chest and lots of ugly black stitches.

As always, the bad new first. In the middle of the abscess was a tumor. Dr. Rutledge did Flora's surgeries today. Dr. Rutledge has done surgeries on both of my former dogs with excellent results. That made me feel a lot better today while Flora was at the vet. I did speak personally w/ Dr. Rutledge on the phone today  - he said it was a mess in there and the tumor/abscess area was well into the "tissue area." He mentioned that the droopiness on the one side of her face could have something to do with the tumor he removed today. Sooooo...its off to biopsy!!! along with the tumors from each of her ears and a large chunk of that thing on her leg (they wanted a better eval of exactly what it is).

Her behavior is better than I expected - she is eating, drinking, and bm is normal. Of course she is obviously uncomfortable but is laying low.

I am to meet with the financial manager on wed.  Flora is scheduled to have her ear wrap removed (hopefully) on wed and drainage tube comes out Fri. am. Her stitches are scheduled to come out on Sept.2nd.

So far so good, Tara

7/28/09 -

Flora is a fawn girl estimated to be around 3 years old. She was found as a stray with pink painted toenails - somebody may have taken care of this girl at one time, but now she is very skinny and has an infected and lacerated left ear. She was not reclaimed, and AABR stepped in to care for this sweet girl and find her a forever home.

She did great with both dogs and cats at the shelter. Flora is wonderful with people. She is at our vets now and getting treated.  Please donate to help pay for her medical bills.

Please apply today to foster or adopt Flora!

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
