5/30/11 - MEMORIAL

Xena passed away this morning at around 9:30.  We were with her when she crossed over the bridge. We did not have to make the decision for her - she went on her own.   We are so thankful that we were with her when she took her last breath and that she knew we were with her and that we loved her.  Our hearts are broken and our home feels empty.  Xena was a very special Boxer girl and so very dear to us.

From the moment Kristin and I put her in my van, she became part of our family and we are so very thankful for having this amazing creature in our lives for the past 8 months.  She gave us so much more than we gave to her.  She made us smile with every wiggle of that little nub of hers, or that little sigh as she puffed her jowls when she was happy.

Wayne, Sydney and I thank AABR from the bottom of our hearts for Xena and for the amazing journey she took us on.  She was very very precious and we loved her so very much.

1/2011 - Adopted!

12/30/10

Xena's foster mom received the biopsy results today.  Xena has been diagnosed with malignant hemangiosarcoma, and her prognosis is only 3-4 months.  We will be trying to make her comfortable and her foster family will continue to provide a loving environment for her.

12/29/10

On Tuesday evening, Xena had to be taken to the emergency vet.  They discovered a mass in her abdomen and recommended surgery.  At our vet's office, she became very pale and needed transfusions due to internal bleeding.  The vet removed a mass the size of a baseball from her spleen and a smaller tumor that was bleeding, as well as removing her spleen.  She almost did not survive the surgery, but Xena surprised everyone with her will to live.  Her foster family was able to bring her home on Christmas Eve.

Xena's prognosis is pending the results of the biopsy.  We will update her page as soon as we know more.  She is recovering well and is gaining more strength with every day.  Please consider sponsoring Xena to help with the costs of her surgery and transfusions.  She fought so hard and her foster family received the best Christmas gift this year for Xena to survive the surgery and come home with them for the holidays.

11/14/10

Xena is doing really well in her foster home and she is getting along great with the other dogs there. Xena is so friendly and loving with everyone she meets, including dogs and cats. She is a couch potato and loves to cuddle with her foster family. Xena has a great appetite and is a chow hound - she is fed twice a day with a midday snack. Xena sleeps with her foster sister on the couch every night. She is completely housebroken and will let you know when she needs out. Xena is a wonderful dog who loves affection and being with people. She also really enjoys walks and going for rides in the car. She is an amazing Boxer girl!

10/5/10 -

Xena was surrendered to the shelter with a list of reasons: just had a new baby, pay cuts at work, working longer hours and not able to let out mid-day.  The owner also indicated that a new boyfriend moved in and was constantly yelling at her to "get rid of the dog." Poor Xena has not had an easy life. She was originally adopted two years ago from an ad on petfinder from a family that was expecting a baby and couldn't afford to keep her anymore. At that time, she had been crated 12-16 hours a day.

Thankfully, Xena is now safe in rescue and in a foster home. We will find her a forever home where she will not be bounced around and discarded any more! Xena is a very affectionate girl. She is housetrained and needs to go out every 5-6 hours during the day. She has been spayed and is up to date on all vet care. Xena is great with children of all ages and also with cats. She is reported to get along well with submissive dogs. Xena knows all of her basic commands, including sit, paw, and lay down. She loves to cuddle at any chance she gets. Xena's foster mom indicates she is settling in well and that she is the sweetest girl! We will update her page soon with more information and new pictures.

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
