Hi there, this is Devon. I know you might be a little scared off by the last update about me, but I wanted to tell you a little about myself. My favorite thing to do is PLAY! I play just like all the other dogs in my house. I can run and jump with the best of them. I am completely a puppy and I usually am still going strong when all my foster brothers and sisters are tired out :) When I am tired, I love to be held and snuggled. I recently learned how to lay on the couch, since they say I am going to be too big someday to be held.

Last week I got to go to the Pet Expo. It was scary at first, but I ended up really liking it. I met lots of dogs and people and I even met one lady who I just fell in love with. I just laid my head on her lap and let her pet me. I've also been to Petco and Petsmart and really like going there too. I got a toy there last time and it is really fun to play with. I didn't know what toys were before, but now I do like to play with them when all my foster brothers and sisters are pooped out and I am still ready to play.

My foster moms say I am just the cutest, sweetest thing and I get lots of hugs and kisses, so it must be true. If you are interested in adopting me, please fill out an application - I am looking forward to meeting you!

Little Devon has had a tough couple of weeks. On New Year's Eve, she suffered a cluster of seizures and had to spend the night in the hospital. Soon after, she had a MRI to confirm that she has hydrocephalus or 'water on the brain'. We are currently managing this condition and the seizures with medication and Devon is doing well. Devon will need to be on these medications for the rest of her life.  Luckily, they are very inexpensive.

Devon truly is a special needs dog and she will need a special home. An ideal home for her would have someone home most of the time to watch over her. A home with no stairs would be ideal as she doesn't see perfectly and with seizures, steps can be dangerous. She would also do best in a quiet household as she startles easily, but would love to have another dog to play with and also to help guide her, again because her vision is not perfect. Above all, Devon needs a home with patience.  Because of her condition, she will always be slower to learn then a normal dog. If you think you are the special home for this special little lady, I encourage you to research hydrocephalus and make sure you truly feel you can provide Devon with what she needs.

Devon is an adorable and amazing little girl who has a slightly silly way of walking (we've taken to calling her "prancer"). She also has an exaggerated startle response when she's overstimulated, but she easily recovers and wants to know about everything and everyone. None of these idiosyncrasies takes away from the fact that she is all boxer and all puppy: eager to explore the world and eager to love up with everyone she meets with cuddles and kisses.

The neurologist who examined Devon felt she might have been exposed to distemper or a similar virus very early in her young life, but that her immune system fought it off and she survived. Her battle left her with a few neurological deficits. Nevertheless, he also said this shouldn't affect her being able to have a full and happy life. We have also observed a seizure with Devon, so this will need monitored.  Devon did bounce back very quickly.

Since she was sprung from a puppy mill, we are working on her housetraining and making progress. She does not mind at all when it's time to go in her crate, and is quiet when it's crate time. She seems fine with other dogs as long as they are easygoing, although it may take a few days for some dogs to get used to some of her movements. All this little girl requires is a little bit of patience, a lot of love, and an eye toward her special needs from a very special someone who could be her first and best Christmas gift ever: a Forever Home.

12/12/10 -

Meet Devon! This little girl was rescued from a puppy mill after having a seizure following her vaccines.  She is having some difficulties with coordination, which we are investigating.  AABR has completed blood work and additional testing - we should have the results soon. Devon is sweet, smart, happy, loving, and of course, she loves to play. She has one of the sweetest personalities around. Devon could easily run for the world's best cuddler. She can be a little shy at first, but warms up quickly and she has lots of love to give. Check back soon for more updates on this cutie, and apply today for adoption!

Before you consider adopting a puppy, please keep in mind that puppies are a lot of work! You'll need to thoroughly puppy proof your house, bring him/her to puppy obedience classes, and socialize him/her with all sorts of people, places, & animals. The more time and energy you 'put into' a pup, the happier you'll be as they get older.

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
