3/1/12 - MEMORIAL

We are sad to inform our AABR family of the loss of another beautiful boxer. Gem passed away peacefully during the afternoon. She had been struggling with kidney failure. Gem will be sadly missed by many.

1/10/12

Gem continues to do great and is an absolute pleasure to have in our home. She has been waiting so patiently for her forever home. I keep telling her that we're looking and waiting for just the right one for her. Gem loves being with her foster brothers, but I'm sure she wouldn't mind being an only dog also.  She wouldn't mind a little pampering...not that she isn't getting plenty of that now. Will you be the lucky family who gets to receive all the love this beautiful boxer girl so willingly gives?

10/31/11

Gem has been in her current foster home for 3 1/2 months now and has to be one of the sweetest and easiest fosters we've had the pleasure of welcoming into our home (and that number is over 50). When Gem first came to us, she did not want to go outside to do her business. I had to leash her and practically drag her off our back deck. She could not wait to come back in. Now, she goes out first thing in the morning with her two foster brothers and comes right back in with them when they're done. She also likes to go out with them and play, running around for some exercise.  Once they've had enough, she is right behind them and ready to come in and take her nap.

Gem is a little shy at first when she meets new people, but she warms up quickly.  Gem is your typical Boxer - she is all wiggles and she gives the most gentle kisses. Gem would do well in any family, but if you are looking for a calm and sweet Boxer girl, then look no further than Gem!

8/25/11

Two days after getting to her new foster home, Gem developed bloody urine and diarrhea. Her foster family took her to the vet where a thorough exam and blood-work were done. The results of that blood-work showed that Gem was in severe kidney failure with only 25% kidney function. She was immediately admitted to the hospital and started on an antibiotic and high volume IV fluids. After 2 days, her foster family took her home to continue with the treatments. When the results of her urine culture came back, her antibiotics needed to be changed to an IV medication that is very costly. Two weeks worth of medication rang in at $735! Twice daily, Gem has been receiving 500 ml of fluid under her skin and IV antibiotics given at home by her foster parents.

Last week, she was retested and her kidney values are improving, but have a long way to go to return to normal. This week Gem saw a specialist and had an ultrasound to rule out kidney stones and masses. The good news is that she doesn't have either. The specialist diagnosed Gem with pyelonephritis, an infection in the kidney most probably due to a urinary tract infection that went unnoticed and traveled up the urinary tract settling in the kidney. The bad news is that Gem needs to have 4 more weeks of this medication-Meropenem. Calculated, that is $1470 which does not include follow-up blood-work to monitor her kidney function or the IV fluids. There is no alternative medication for Gem's infection, she must have it as it is the safest drug that will fight this particular infection.

Gem needs sponsors that will donate to her care. She will not survive if she doesn't have this antibiotic and the infection worsens. Please consider helping, we have spared no expense to help get her this far and her fosters have stepped up and diligently followed the recommended treatments at home to help save the cost of continued hospitalization. She is eating and drinking, and even wants to engage in play at times. We know the treatment is working, but we will need your help to continue to bring her fully under control and into good health. Won't you PLEASE consider donating to Gems's care. She sure would be grateful.

7/14/11

Gem is back in foster and she truly is a gem. She is so calm and gentle, but we've already seen that she is willing and wants to play. I'm sure the longer she is with us, the more her playful side will come out. Gem knows sit and gives her paw when asked and is so easy to walk. Once we learn more about her, we will add another update.

7/4/11

Gem has lost her foster home and is currently at the kennel. This sweet and gentle girl really needs a home. Please offer to get her out of the kennel and submit your application today for Gem!

6/25/11

Gem continues to do well in her foster home. Once evaluated by our vet, it was determined that Gem is estimated to be 5-6 years young. It is obvious that she was a breeder girl that did not live in kind conditions, but Gem has overcome that in her loving foster home. She does well with her foster fur brother and loves the foster grandson. She is gentle and kind. Gem will be a loving companion for anyone looking to add a great family member. Snatch this gem up today!

4/22/11 -

We received a request from a local vet hospital that they had a boxer that was surrendered to them and they asked us if we could please take her into rescue.

Meet Gem. She is a total gem, sweetheart, doll baby - any term you would use to fondly describe a sweet dog! She is still young and is looking for a new life with a new family. We will update her page as we learn more about this GEM of a girl!!

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
