The best way to describe Heidi is happy, happy, happy!  She loves to wrestle and play tug of war, so she needs a home where someone is willing to give her that attention. She doesn’t play 24/7 like a puppy would, but she does like to have a couple of play sessions a day. Heidi has been great around my nieces, ages 3 and 5 years . She does display some difficulty with food around other dogs, but otherwise gets along well with others.

Heidi loves when company comes over to visit and is very happy to greet people she does not know.   She is a good watch dog and will bark when she hears or sees activity outside.  She has not been around cats, but I do not think she would be a good match for a home with cats.  She does not like to be in a crate, but has done very well when left loose in the house when alone.  Thunderstorms still make her nervous, but she does not get frantic -she just pants and paces.  Heidi needs a home where she will be allowed on the sofa and the bed, as she is already used to this and enjoys lounging on them.  If you can provide a forever home for Heidi, apply today!

Included are some new photos from Heidi's foster home.  She did test positive for heartworm, so is undergoing treatment at this time.  Heidi has adjusted really well to the move and is in a foster home with several other dogs.  She has a fun loving disposition.

Heidi arrived in Maryland from Georgia on Wednesday. Her foster mom reports she is settling in well and that she is very sweet and lovable. Heidi is not a hyper Boxer, but she does like to play gently and loves rolling around on her back. She is getting along great with the other dogs in the foster home, although she can be protective of her food. She does not like to be crated, but has done well being left out loose when no one is home. Heidi enjoys just hanging out on the sofa. She LOVES to be petted and hugged!! Even the smallest amount of attention goes a long way with Heidi!

5/28/11 -

Meet Heidi! She is a senior boxer who was a tornado victim in Georgia.  The home and neighborhood she lived in were completely destroyed and her owner had to surrender Heidi, as well as a young boxer mix and a cocker spaniel, to a shelter.  She was a shelter favorite, but was scheduled to be euthanized due to lack of space for incoming dogs.  Heidi was lucky enough to be pulled by rescue.

The temporary foster home in Georgia indicates that Heidi is very confused and seems to be looking for her owner and her home.  She is getting along well with the other dogs.  Heidi is reported to be very sweet and just wants to relax like most seniors do.  Her life since the tornado has been turned upside down and she has not had a lot of stability as a result.  She is being transported to Maryland this week and will be brought up to date on all vet care.  We will update Heidi's page once her new foster family gets to know her better.

Heidi deserves to have a place to call home in her remaining years.  Can you be that special family that can offer Heidi a forever home where she will come to know that she feels loved and belongs somewhere again in her golden years?

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
