08/28/11 - We are very sad to advise that Columbo passed on yesterday.  He was adopted into a loving home and doing very well.  He was even using a cart to help him with his hind leg problem, when he started to deteriorate.  His adoptive family rushed him to the vet and given IV fluids.

His foster advocate writes:

Both vets felt that Columbo either developed another FCE [Fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy], or the one he had moved up his spine.  The only other test that would have been left to pursue would have been an MRI, but in his condition, neither vet recommended that be done.

I know this has come as a shock to all of us, but ... everything possible was done to diagnose Columbo.  ... sometimes we do everything we can to save a dog and it is still not enough.  What I want to ask everyone is to remember Columbo's life, not linger on his death.

Columbo touched many people with his story of survival.  He came to us that July evening hours from death.  Within a week he was back to life, he got adopted, he was able to stand proudly every bit of the show dog he was.  He stood proud in his cart as he walked down the street with Missi and also stood proudly at the treat bar at Petco patiently waiting for treats :)  AABR gave Columbo his dignity back and in the end he passed on with that dignity still intact.  So again, ... as someone who loved Columbo more than words, celebrate his life, because even though short, he got to live it to the fullest because of AABR!

As you can see by the new pictures, Columbo is a new dog. It is amazing what good food and care can do. Columbo was brought back from the dead and look at him now. I didn't even realize it was him when I saw Columbo at the Bark in the Park event last week. He is as handsome as any boxer boy can be. Columbo thanks you from the bottom of his heart for all of your donations and get well wishes.

Update: 07/16/11 -

Columbo's neck is slowly healing. The dead skin may need to be removed in some surgeries, and covers deeper wounds.  But we're encouraged to see hair growth on the new skin above.  He is now walking slowly on three legs.  One leg is not working and we will keep you advised as we learn more.

The investigation is continuing into how he got this way. We've tracked ownership of Columbo through his microchip, (who we now know was named Willis at one point) to as recently as three years ago. We have a birth date (he's 8), and know he was a single point away from earning his championship in the show ring.
How could a dog that was well-bred and well-cared for in his early years end up in the condition? I really hope we find that answer.

Help Us Find Columbo's Abuser!

Do you know this dog?  Did you see anyone who might be of interest in this abuse case?

Columbo was found tied with a big chain to a fence and near death, at 1900 Morse St in North Philly PA.  Click on the map and the street view photo to the right... Maybe you know who last had Columbo?

Please contact us at info@adoptaboxerrescue.com if you know something that could help us stop this abuser.

7/8/11 -

So here's Columbo, direct from his hospital cage. What a gorgeous boy he is! Columbo was rescued by animal control this evening from a vacant lot where he had been chained for who knows how long, in the middle of a heat wave in the area. Columbo is very skinny. Where the chain was rubbing him, he was infested with maggots. To make matters worse, his left leg swings lifelessly.

Columbo is at the vet hospital right now. His neck wound has been treated and he is getting antibiotics and fluids to stabilize him. Once Columbo is stable, they'll try to figure out what is wrong with his leg. We are in urgent need of donations to help with Columbo's medical care. Please sponsor this sweet boy today so we can help him get better and into a loving home. Columbo will be in need of a foster home once he is released from the vet's office.

ABC Action News

Animal welfare officials are looking for the person who left a dog to die in North Philadelphia, last week.

Thank you to Columbo's Gold sponsors:

Thank You to all who followed Clumbo's story and contributed to his recovery and final happy ending.  Yes, even though it was all too short, he may have died the night we got him, chained to that fence in a vacant lot.  Instead, he was happy and cared for by AABR volunteers and in his loving home.

We will miss you Columbo...

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
