12/21/13 - MEMORIAL Our boy Apache had
a wonderful Thanksgiving with his new friends, Brewster and Tinkerbell. He
was putting on weight, his heartbeat was steady, and he just loved going
outside and taking it all in and meeting new dog and people friends. He
became more assertive about letting us know what he wanted. His
unprecedented love of bananas turned him from Clark Kent into Superman
whenever he saw one of those wonderful yellow things.
We were so happy to see him doing so well. AABR volunteer Beth Downey of
Boxerhaus.com found an anonymous donor who sent us a Holter monitor to keep
tabs on his heart and connected us with Jennifer Tellier and Susan Watts,
who donated a vest for the monitor, which will help many other AABR dogs.
Unfortunately, we discovered that although his heart condition was under
control, he also suffered from a brain tumor. Eventually the tumor caused a
series of neurological episodes which caused his quality of life to decline
rapidly. We decided to let him go peacefully with dignity, surrounded by his
friends who gave him a wonderful last meal of chicken and bananas.
Apache was such a perfect blend of sweet and soulful. His gentleness,
mild manner, big wet soulful eyes, sense of wonderment at getting attention
and affection, obsession with bananas, his soft cheek touch, and
appreciation for his dog and human friends, all made him unforgettable. He
was that dog you wanted everyone to meet. He had a perfect temperament. He
didn't even seem to mind puppy antics and just wanted everyone to get along.
So many people came together to help this gentle soul in his last few months
and he built up quite a fan club in a very short time. It was so rewarding
to see him thinking, "Wow. This is the good life. I could really get used to
this."
RIP sweet Apache. We would do it all over again in a second.

Apache is a very calm and
gentle boy who even tolerates puppies. Instead of the usual "Boxer lean," he
does an adorable "cheek lean" - pressing his soft cheek up against you. He
also loves to rest his chin on your knee. Everyone comments on what a
gentleman he is -especially with children. He loved seeing all of the
children trick-or-treating in the building.
Apache has been winning hearts --especially one belonging to an English
Bulldog named Daisy. However, we still are keeping close tabs on HIS heart.
We still need a Holter monitor to make sure we've got his cardio medications
right, but we need your help. Please donate toward his medical care -or if
you have a Holter monitor that you are not using and can donate to AABR,
please let us know.

Apache went to the vet today
to continue to monitor his heart condition. They do recommend checking
Apache frequently with a Holter monitor to evaluate the dosage of medication
he is receiving. The good news is that the vet is very optimistic that
Apache's condition can be managed with the medication and that he can have a
great quality of life!

Apache is an 11 year old boy who has been showing up in the Brooklyn
shelter since 2003. He most recently came in as a stray in July 2013 and was
returned to his owner. On Friday, 9/20/13, Apache was found in the middle of
the Belt Parkway after he was hit by a car. The shelter staff loved him so
much they released Apache to AABR on a foster basis while they contacted his
owner. Yesterday, he was officially released to rescue so we can find Apache
a wonderful, forever home.
Unfortunately, it became apparent yesterday evening that something was
not right with Apache. He was rushed to the emergency vet who discovered
that Apache was in ventricular tachycardia, a deadly heart rhythm. He is
still unstable, but AABR is trying everything we can to get his heart to a
normal rhythm. Right now, he is in ICU on several medications. The estimate
is about $4000 to try to save his life. There are no guarantees, but we want
to give him any chance we can. If you can make any donation, nothing
is too small. Please help us give him that chance. I can't even begin to
tell you how special this dog is - he steals the heart of everyone he meets.
This boy deserves a chance at life. |
