2/12/14 Nina had
a recheck appointment today and the vet feels she has healed nicely.
The wrap has been taken off and Nina is wearing an E-Collar to keep her from
licking it. She will get her sutures out in two weeks and should be
completely healed by that time!

Nina
continues to make a lot of progress in her foster home and her leg is
healing well. She just started playing with a ball and is coming out
of her shell. Nina is getting better with her foster brother, but can
be very dominant with him. She would do best in a home without cats, as she
doesn't understand how rough she can be. Nina is a sweet girl who is
ready to find a forever family of her own. Apply today to adopt Nina!

Nina has
been very busy the last several days! She was transferred to another area
hospital on Thursday to undergo extensive surgery to repair her broken leg.
The doctors believe her injury occurred about two weeks ago. During that
time, her thigh muscles had contracted, making the repair even more
difficult. The surgeon had to first stretch the muscle out before
re-aligning the bone. Nina required a plate and seven pins to make the
repair. You can see by the before and after x-rays just how bad the break
was. The doctors also cleaned her wounds very thoroughly and they are
beginning to heal as well. This little girl is quite the trooper - she was
up on her feet and walking around the very next day! (video here -

Nina also had several visitors who all fell in love with her sweet
personality. Nina has quite a following on our Facebook page, too! When a
dog like Nina needs our help, we jump in and do what needs to be done and
worry about fundraising once the dog has been stabilized. It's a leap of
faith for us - trusting that we can get the word out to our supporters and
they will respond when we need them the most. Please consider making a
donation to Nina's care by clicking on the donate button at the top of her
page. We can't do what we do without all of you!
Nina has just arrived at her new foster home. Her foster mom is a
vet tech who will be able to complete daily bandage changes and monitor her
recovery. We will continue to keep you updated about Nina's progress.

AABR received the call late Tuesday afternoon that a female boxer had
been brought into the Philly shelter with a severely injured leg. This tiny
little girl arrived with an old bandage wrapped around her rear right leg
and when the shelter unwrapped it to take a look, they knew she needed
immediate care.
Our volunteers jumped right on it and had Nina to U Penn for emergency
treatment right away. She was dehydrated and in pain, but otherwise in good
spirits. Weighing in at just 30 pounds, little Nina spent a couple of hours
receiving fluids while we waited for diagnostic tests to come back. She has
two wounds on her leg. The one on the back of her knee is large, but mostly
superficial. There is skin missing and it will need to be cleaned often
while it heals. The other wound is on the front of her ankle. It is very
deep and causing the swelling you see in her foot. When the doctor cleaned
that one out, her tendons were exposed. Once the radiologist had a chance
to review the x-rays, it was determined that Nina does have a bad fracture.
She will require surgery to repair it.
They gave us the option of amputating her leg, but we believe we can (and
should) save it. Nina is a healthy young dog and deserves a chance.
We think Nina is about a year old. She has no puppy teeth left and
her growth plates are closed. She is a bit thin, but that's an easy fix!
Nina will be available for adoption once she is well on the path to
recovery. Please consider sponsoring Nina and helping with her surgery
that is scheduled for tomorrow. |
