7/12/15 - MEMORIAL Today I have to
tell you news that I have been dreading to share. We have known for
some time that our little Mighty Mouse, Kesler, has had a tumor affecting
his femur. We chose to keep it to ourselves because we didn't want
whatever time he had with us to be overshadowed by a ticking clock.
Last weekend, he took a spill and we were afraid of a break. We
thought for sure we would be saying goodbye and that our last memory would
be of his cries. Fortunately, he is a strong boy and after a few days,
he seemed to be acting more like himself. His leg continued to dangle,
though, and on Friday we took an X-ray, which confirmed my worst fear.
Kesler's leg was broken. For a week, my sweet, funny, energetic old
man has been muscling through his day on a broken leg.
We stopped thinking of ourselves as his foster family months ago when we
first got the news. And on Friday, as his family and the people
supposed to protect him, we made the heart wrenching decision to give him
the weekend of his life and then say goodbye. We chose to do this so
that Kesler could go on his next journey still loving life and knowing only
happiness. I work in the veterinary field, and I assure you that this
is a painful disease for these guys. After hearing his cries last
weekend, we never wanted him to feel that pain again.
Our biggest comfort is knowing that after years of neglect that resulted
in abandonment, he was able to get out of the shelter and into the safety of
our home because of AABR. Kesler knew family, warm beds, a full belly,
and toys. His heart had been healed.

Kesler just wanted to check in
with everyone to announce that his hold is up and he is officially an AABR
dog! Kesler also saw the vet and has already gained almost 3 lbs!
He started a second antibiotic to try and help his prostate and the doctor
did confirm the perineal hernia. Kesler's main goal right now is
weight gain. He is eating and drinking like a champ. We will
continue to take it slow and allow Kesler to enjoy being loved!

AABR received information about a senior boy who had been left tied to a
pole in NYC. Though he was picked up as a stray, he is on legal hold
due to his condition. Thankfully, the shelter has agreed to allow
Kesler to serve his hold in a foster home.
The shelter reports that Kesler is just 48 lbs and has numerous pressure
sores on his body. He is also missing some teeth. Kesler is
reported to be friendly to people and dogs.
We will be calling this boy Kesler, in honor of volunteer Jan Kesler, who
loved the seniors (the shelter assigned him the name of Mike Tyson).
Kesler has arrived at his foster placement with AABR and is doing well.
We will be posting more information as he settles in. |
