Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)

6/14/15

Bosley's test results are back and he is a carrier for the two mutations for Degenerative Myelopathy (DM).  Given this and the physical exam, the vet does feel that he can be diagnosed with DM.  The recommendations are to keep Bosley active with walks, physical therapy, and/or hydrotherapy.  His foster mom's goal is to give Bosley the absolute best quality of life until it is time to say goodbye.  He is still in good spirits, but it is heartbreaking to watch his decline.

Bosley loves the yard and rolling around in the grass.  He also loves car rides and going on walks at the park with his sisters and brothers.  One of his favorite things to do is wheel his cart into the bushes and just stand in there - he is a silly boy!  Bosley is going through a lot of supplies and we will be posting an Amazon wish list for him.  We appreciate all of Bosley's supporters and hope to give this boy many more good days in foster as he deals with this progressive condition.

6/03/15

Bosley saw the neurologist at the University of Pennsylvania veterinary hospital yesterday.  Blood was drawn and submitted for genetic analysis to screen for the mutation which would indicate the presence of degenerative myelopathy (DM).  This is a genetic disease that results in progressive degeneration of the spinal cord.  The results may take up to two weeks, and further decisions regarding his care will be made at that time.  Bosley also has gingival hyperplasia, severe periodontal disease, and ulcerations in his mouth.  He will begin antibiotics and pain medication.  Please consider donating to help with Bosley's care!  We will post an update as soon as we know more about his test results.

5/27/15

Bosley has arrived at his foster home and is settling in well.  He has six canine siblings and loves being part of the family.  Bosley is absolutely the most precious boy.  Despite his condition, Bosley is filled with love and joy for everything.  He is an inspiration.  Bosley now has a set of wheels which helps his mobility.

Bosley will be scheduled soon to see a specialist to determine what is causing his hind leg weakness.  Please support Bosley and donate towards his care.  He is such a happy boy who still wants to experience all that life has to offer.

5/10/15 -

Bosley was found as a stray and is estimated to be around 10 years of age.  The shelter reports that he is very friendly with other dogs.  Bosley is showing hind leg weakness, so would do best in a home without a lot of stairs.  Bosley's X-rays revealed severe arthritis of the spine, narrow disc spaces, and disc compression on the spinal cord.  He is starting NSAID medication.

Bosley's stray hold was up today and he is in urgent need of a foster home with AABR so we can help this special boy.  If you can provide a foster placement for Bosley, please let us know as soon as possible so we can make arrangements to get him to our rescue.

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 3 months to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Not every home is the right match for a boxer, and matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us at your home visit of other dogs you are interested...  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
