This
is the latest update about
Giselle
NY
- now
Baloo.
Prepare yourselves to finally answer the question -
What's love
got to do with it?
What
a perfect family picture.
Hi
Lisa,
Sorry for the delay of submitting my latest update. The picture is
of my daughter Emma and Baloo...this is how I found them, both fast
asleep.
The latest thyroid level came back indicating that the current dose
of meds is perfect. She won't have to be tested for 6 months.
Baloo has settled in like she has always been here. Today we went
to field day at Emma's school, and she was a big hit. She did start
barking when the kids were screaming in a tug-of-war game, but I
really think she thought something was wrong!
She still won’t really chew her chew toys, or anything else for
that matter, but loves fetch and her own tug-of-war. She won't eat
the milkbones either. In fact the other day I came into the kitchen
and she had gotten into the bag of garbage and I thought "she really
is a dog!" She rarely ever barks, maybe a little when someone comes
in, but that's about it. I see where the "Johnny One Note name came
in though! My hubby Gregg loves to get down and wrestle with her, and
she has the playful growl going. When she really gets excited, she
hits "the note!" It really is hilarious!
Well, I guess that's it for now. Hope all is well on your end, and
again, it really is a tremendous thing you do!

Giselle
I can't believe a week has gone by already! Giselle fits in so well
it's like she's been here forever! First, my kids have bestowed a new
name on her. We are calling her Baloo, after the big friendly child
protecting bear from Jungle Book. It's fitting for her, especially
since we all went to a production of Jungle Book right before picking
her up. She seems to like it. And besides, it's better than the name
my 3 yr. old wanted...Green! Baloo is doing great and seems to be
really happy. She was obviously nervous the first few days, and had
several accidents in the house. It seems this happened when she
thought we had left her...I guess she was unfamiliar with the concept
of the shower...I wasn't gone that long! On Wednesday I guess she
knew that we would always be back and has been perfect ever since.
She adores the kids, even climbed into the bathtub with them the first
night because it looked like they were having so much fun! The kids
walk her in the back yard and she is as gentle as can be on the leash.
She walks with us every day to drop off and pick up Emma at school.
Even Emma's 1st grade class is in love with her!
We went to the vets on Wed. and they did some bloodwork. Her med
level was a bit high so she now gets .4mg of her thyroid medicine 2X a
day. The doc also put her on allergy medicine because he saw some
irritation spots on her. Within a few sort days, her coat is a silky
as can be.
As far as eating, she doesn't seem to be interested at all in the
morning food, but eats each night. She is still on the food the Lisa
had her on. She will not even try the milkbones we got her...I
thought it was in the dog handbook that all dogs loved these!! She
is starting to play with the toys we got her, especially the pull
rope. She really loves playing with that with Gregg. We have a huge
pillow bed for her that we still bring upstairs at night and put by
our bed and she is content. She will sleep there unless my daughter
calls dibs and she sleeps with her...thank goodness she has a double
bed! Jake, the 3yr. old likes to lay with her on her pillow.
Everything is just perfect with her. I find it hard to believe that
anyone would give her up. A gentle pup like this was obviously raised
with love or she wouldn't be such an angel. I guess it was just meant
to be that Baloo adopted us! We already have 2 people wanting her to
stay with them when we go on vacation at the end of the summer.
I guess that's it for now. Let me know if there is any more info you
need, as I know we are to give weekly updates. I will forward a pic
of her, and then get together an update for the website. Prospective
adopters should know what a joy it can be to get an older dog, even
with her medical condition. Again, thanks for everything, and I will
send updates!
Happy Mothers Day...it's a great one for me!!

Giselle
(NY) - Fainting, and the Importance of Seeking Medical
Help. "On Monday I came
home from work, and as usual, dropped off my purse and took the dogs out.
I got as far as the elevator and Giselle (my new foster girly) fainted. We got her to the car (she's a bit
of a fatty due to what we now know is a thyroid problem) and immediately
headed toward the vet's office.
While on the
parkway, my tire had a blow out.
From
the side of the parkway, I called Meadow Veterinary Hospital, the vet's
office I was rushing her to. Jamie told her staff to find out where
I was stuck. They came immediately!
Now
here's the point I'm making - they DID NOT come to get me - I'm an
adult, I can wait for the tow truck. They came to get Giselle!
They risked their lives, pulling off onto the side of a busy New York
roadway, got Giselle, and left because I had a dog that may have been in
danger of losing her life and needed to see a vet immediately!
Until Giselle
was seen by a vet, no one knew how serious her 'spell' was - and Jamie was
not going to put this dog at risk guessing what the problem may be. Now -
that's RESCUE ! - The dogs come first, always! When I finally got to the
vet's office, Giselle's blood had been drawn, she had 3 EKG's performed
and her blood pressure was being monitored constantly. Giselle survived
and she's fine now... she's on medication (pills) for her thyroid." -

Giselle has been in foster care for a
week now and has proven to be one of the best dogs around. I'm sure you've
read about our little 'adventure' on the front page of our site and yes,
Giselle has a problem thyroid. But, she takes her pills like a champ and
she's getting healthy and strong. Her legs are no longer red and swollen,
she's got some peach fuzz on her tail and.... (I'm so jealous) she's getting
her waist line back! So how is Giselle's personality? TERRIFIC! There is
not a mean bone in this dog's body. My guess from watching her in the house
is that she never had a toy to play with - doesn't know what they are. And,
she probably never had the chance to run and play - she's got very little
muscle. But that's changing every single day. She loves going to the park
every day and running with the resident boxer boy. She's learned to do the
typical boxer 'box' with him and makes the funniest sounds while she's
playing - we've started calling her Johnny One Note - she holds it for the
longest time. She's perfect in the house - 100% housebroken and is left
home for a full workday without any problem. She does not need a crate.
Giselle is the most gentle dog you can imagine on lead - never pulling.
She does not jump up on people so she would be wonderful in a home with a
child and/or an elderly person.
Giselle is street smart, waiting until you tell her to cross the street.
She doesn't know too many basic commands, but honestly, it's not a problem
at all - she's so calm and so gentle that she just seems to know what you
want. She would be fine as a big city girl or as a country bumpkin - she's
willing to adjust to your needs. She's fine with the resident cat and other
dogs.
As for her Thyroid condition - it is completely controlled by her medication
AND Meadow Veterinary Hospital generously will donate 1 year of pills to the
family that adopts Giselle. The perfect home for Giselle would be with a
family that loves a boxer personality without the more typical high energy
level. A family that is looking for trust and loyalty (she's a wonderful
watchdog), without the need for obedience training. If what you're looking
for is a steady personality and an abundance of love, please contact us
about Giselle - she's perfect!

Giselle – aka GiGi
Her sweetness shines
through the second you meet her. The pain she obviously has been living
with is apparent – her legs are swollen and painfully red, her tail is
completely without hair. She was immediately taken to our vet who did a
skin scraping (no mites) and took lots of blood – we’ll have the results in
a few days but the consensus seems to be that her problem is easily fixed
and as soon as we know, we’ll post an update.
From the moment I met Giselle (a beautiful name for a
beautiful heart), I was in love. This sweet girl has yet to meet anyone
that she didn’t like – dog, cat, adults, children – everyone gets the same
sweet look and happy tail wags (yes she has a tail but there’s no mistaking
her heritage – she’s all boxer). Unfortunately, her legs are quite swollen
and painful for her to walk on, but she so wants to play with the resident
boxer boy here – she does the typical front end down, tushy in the air pose
that says “I wanna play with you”. I can’t wait for her legs to heal so
that she can really enjoy life.
GiGi is 100% housebroken, does not need a crate – she
is left home for a full workday and touches nothing. She is wonderful on
lead and is traffic smart so she would be fine living in an apartment or
private home. She was turned into a kill shelter with the usual ‘we don’t
have time for her’ reason given. Well, we have all the time in the world
for this loving little girl. And once you meet her, I know you’ll agree
with us that time spent with GiGi will be the best time of your life.
