08/24/05 Rikki has been in my home
just about a month now and is a total angel. I have a rather spoiled 10
year old cat who Rikki just dotes on. If Tika is out of Rikki's sight for
more than a few minutes, she goes to check on her... and comes back with
"happy tail" like she is telling me all is ok. The introduction of my cat
to Rikki has been remarkably smooth.... we have not had a hiss or a growl...
amazingly. The other morning, Rikki was laying half in the bedroom door and
half in the hallway to watch me in the bathroom (I can't be out of sight
more than a few minutes either) and Tika wanted out of the bedroom. The
only way out was across Rikki... and the smallest part of Rikki is her
head. So I look over to see my 13 pound Maine Coon hopping across Rikki's
face. The only thing that moved on Rikki was her tail--the happy tail
again. I was stunned.
Rikki has made people friends too. We walk every evening, and there are
a couple of girls in the neighborhood who wait for us to go by their house,
just so they can pet Rikki. They have also taken to "stealing" dog treats
from their dogs (pit bull mixes... one of whom is another critter friend of
Rikki, his name is Tyson) and giving them to Rikki. She won't eat them
while we are walking, but does eat them once we get home. I have new
neighbors across the street, an older couple, and their 10 year old
granddaughter LOVES Rikki. She spends weekends with her grandparents....
well, actually she sleeps at her grandparents, she spends her days with
Rikki. She loves to groom Rikki, and Rikki loves to be groomed. She brings
her grandparents Pomeranian mix (Duke) over to play too. I went out to
check on them Sunday afternoon, and all 3 were asleep in the shade on a
blanket.... it was a true Kodak moment. We also went to visit my family the
other weekend, about a 2 hour car trip. Rikki was perfect... in the car and
with my sister's Yorkie (Sooner). Again, she hopped right up on the couch
with my sister and her dog and took a nap. My family loves her too... in
fact I thought I may have to fight my sister to get her home--she wanted to
trade her Yorkie for Rikki! Absolutely no deal is what I told her.
The work AABR does is amazing. I cannot believe anyone would get rid of
Rikki... or not offer her the simple comforts of vet care or a heartworm
preventative. She is still heartworm positive, and needs to have the fatty
lump/cyst removed from her ear. It is growing bigger but no vets want to
take it off and risk anesthesia while she is HW positive. In this humid
weather, it is bothering her... but she is a trooper. She tolerates me
checking it, and occasionally putting an ice pack on it (don't know if it
helps, but it does cool it off and it seems to relieve some of her
discomfort). I don't think I have ever been around such a sweet dog...
everyone is her friend and she loves everyone. She has definitely left HUGE
pawprints on my heart. There is nothing like getting her "kidney bean"
dance when I come home.

Rikki completed her first HW treatment and is doing
fantastic in her foster home. She loves her foster sister kitty and is so
well behaved that the neighbors look for her.
Please make a donation to help us
pay for her second treatment coming up. Its so very expensive to help the
dogs with heartworm.
Please donate to Rikki's medical
care today.

Rikki is doing WONDERFULLY!! She came through her Heartworm treatment like
a Star on Broadway! She had NO adverse effects to this potent medication.
She spent two full days at Community Animal Hospital where she took the
staff's hearts for a full tug! Dr. Sloat and his staff took Excellent Care
of her, he and his staff are just AMAZING!
Rikki just loves everyone! With this little girl, you cannot go wrong, she
is an Angel!
She has gained 2lbs and currently at full boxer weight, A PERFECT 60lbs!
Rikki came home to new foster kittens she just ADORES! She is so very
gentle with them and loves to give kisses, she even checks on them when
one cries!
She is resting comfortably in the heat, staying close to the cool AC.
Smart Girl!
Rikki loves her chew bones and special treats of cheese and jerky! Turn on
that Chubby Checker song, because this girl is doing the "Boxer Wiggle"
and "The Twist!"

Rikki will be treated for heartworms this week. She has had her
exam and blood tests and is healthy. We will update after her treatment.
Troy has been treated and he is fine!

Rikki
The sad eyes of Rikki beg for a person who will love her,
and be gentle to her for the rest of her sweet life. She has had a hard
life to say the least. Rikki was in a high kill shelter when Adopt A Boxer
Rescue received a call that she was to be euthanzied the next morning. AABR
agreed to save her life.
She traveled 14 hours with Troy, by truck to
PA where she was given a complete physical. We received a call from the vet
that said that Rikki is heartworm positive. This poor girl needs us now
more than ever.
We need to get her into a foster home so that she can begin
treatment. Heartworm is NOT spread from dog to dog. The most important
thing is that she is allowed to sleep all she wants and be kept quiet until
the medications are finished working.
She has wonderful boxer qualities like the big brown eyes that melt you
and the happy disposition. She will blossom, and if you are the lucky
one to witness it you will never forget the feeling when those big brown
eyes look up at you and thank you with every beat of her heart.
This is what Adopt A Boxer Rescue is all about... saving the ones that
need us the most. This is where rescue needs YOU desperately. Please
someone open your home and heart Rikki .
Please don't think that someone else will step up to help Rikki...Its
YOU!
Taking an easy dog from
someone who has to move and rehoming him is not a huge challenge. The
challenge is transporting and caring for dogs like Marshall, Rikki, and
Atticus. The challenge is finding the funds to help the dogs
in need of medical care.
Thatıs where YOU come in.
We need donations to cover the medical bills for these dogs. Remember we
get no public or private funding. We rely on adoption fees and your
donations to cover our expenses.
