08/04/06 - Memorial - Grant

It is with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you that Grant has died.  He was found dead in the kennel this morning by the kennel staff that loved him and took good care of him..  Thank you to the great staff at the kennel for all the extra TLC you showed Grant.

A wonderful volunteer Charlotte, visited Grant everyday and took him out for a walk or when it was too hot they sat under the shade tree nearby.  Yesterday they sat under that tree and Charlotte petted the old guy and made him feel loved.

Seniors are passed up all to often.  They still have so much love and so much personality to share with us.

He was wonderful in every way.  He was gentle, obedient, and loved attention.  He actually liked cats.  His drawbacks were that he looked older and one got the impression that he wasn't long for this world because he had lived such a hard life.  That being said, I am glad I had the opportunity to get to know him, love him a little, even if it was only a month, and give him some sense of belonging.  He would not have had that if I hadn't gone to him, taken him to the park, taken him in the pond for a swim, allowed him to run off leash in the fenced yard.  He got as much of being free and loved as I could give him, short of fostering or adopting him, which I would have done if time had allowed.

He died, I fear, an ugly, difficult death.  He bloated during the night in the kennel.  He wolfed his food and was terribly underweight.  I took him macaroni and cheese every week, and then some.  I believe he got excellent attention at the kennel but it just wasn't enough.  Earlier this week I took a stool specimen to LCVC and checked for parasites.  He was clear.  That tells me he was so stressed he couldn't put weight on.

I laid under the trees in a grove yesterday with him.  I looked at his body.  His joints looked enlarged and calloused, his skin was mottled, his teeth were yellowed with tartar, and as always, he was cachectic.  He rolled in the grass with great joy, and was peaceful his last day of life.  I rubbed him and fed him baked salmon I had left over from the night before dinner.  He loved it.  I am so grateful for having had the chance to know him.  I feel like I've lost one of my own.

Fondly,
Charlotte

Update -I met Grant for the first time last week. I have been taking him for walks at a nearby park and he has been just amazing as far as being obedient and heeling on leash. He is friendly and very playful. If I throw a ball in the play yard he will retrieve it, then wants to play "hard to get" but it is all in good fun. He is loving and willing to please. I enjoy walking him and I think he looks forward to my visits with him.

He is an energetic dog with a laid-back personality. He will make someone very happy  when given the chance to get into a "forever home". He seems to be housebroken and follows some obedience commands. Grant just needs the opportunity to meet and greet you with his affectionate manner and wiggly boxer kisses. Grant also appears to be friendly with other animals when he is approached and seems to be unruffled by the presence of children. He will make a great friend for whomever is lucky enough to adopt him.

6/6/06 - Grant

Grant was found as a stray and taken to the shelter where he sat and waited for his owners to come claim him.  Sadly for Grant, no one came to take him home.

Grant will be examined by the vet and we will update his page as soon as we learn more about him.  He appears to be a very sweet gentleman and the transporter (Bert) loved him.  He said he was very well behaved in the car and walked well on the leash.

If you can find room in your home and heart to give this sweet boy a place to call his own.  He already has opened up a bit and give very gentle kisses.

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read the information on our Adoption Procedures, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.

Adoptions Fee: $300
