10/13/06 - Stella is now in foster...

Stella is safe in a home as I type this. She is so sweet!! OMG she is so very thin. Boxers, as we all know, don't kennel well, and the stress of three surgeries and the long, long stay at the specialty animal hospital has taken it's toll.  She is just skin and bones.

Stella stills has a long road to recovery.  She is using her leg very well, but it will take a while for her to build muscle and control.

We are now looking for her perfect home. Will it be yours?

Email Jamie if you are interested  NYBoxerRescue@yahoo.com

09/16/06 -

Stella has had to undergo another surgery because she had no feeling in her leg.  The good news is that it worked.  Stella is still at the vet hospital, and will be there for another two weeks.

Thanks to all those that are helping us with her medical bills and best wishes.

8/24/06

Stella's sling has been removed and her hip has stayed in place!!! She is getting physical therapy now so her hip muscles will stay strong and not atrophy from non use. Stella will be ready for her foster home next week (a permanent home would even be better).

8/19/06 -

Stella is going to be x-rayed on the 21st or 22nd and the sling will be removed.

We will need a foster home or place that really understands that she needs crate rest 100% of the time except for going out to do her business.

Stella needs a HERO!

Stella is such a beautiful and sweet girl. Everyone who meets her just melts but that did not help her luck. Stella needed a second surgery. Her hip did not stay in the socket. The breaks in her leg were set and are stable but her hip (which is a ball and socket) popped out again. When this happens the ball (the Femoral head) is usually removed and scar tissue forms and the dog recovers and has full use of the back leg. In Stella's case we want her hip joint to bear weight now so she won't put too much weight on the repaired broken bottom part of her leg. The surgeon put her Femoral head back in her hip socket and wired it in place.

We are keeping our fingers and toes crossed that this will hold and Stella's recovery will go smoothly now. Stella should be good as new when all this is over.

Please help with her medical bills.

We are still looking for a foster home that can keep her activity level down for 4 weeks. Please email me if you think your home can be Stella's.

8/10/06 - This is Stella...

Or at least this was Stella a few short weeks ago when AABR had her for a day or two.  She was luckier then... She had been picked up as a stray off the streets of NYC by the CACC, and was in pretty good shape.  AABR had her in foster, when her owners came to claim her.  The shelter system decided she should go back to her owners, making them promise to take better care of her and keep her safe.

Well... The owners allowed her to get out again, and this time there has been terrible consequences for Stella.  She was hit by a car and her leg was broken in four places!  The owners could not or would not afford the ~ $4,000 in vet bills to try and save Stella's hip and leg, so AABR was asked to take her.  The decision had to be made to try to save her leg or amputate.  We decided to save her leg.

Stella has a long road ahead of her.  She will need to be kept quiet, and resting for some time, and will need follow up visits and possibly further treatment.

WE really need your help with this one... A foster home with a quiet environment would give this little girl the chance to recover.  We could also use help with her medical bills.  AABR is committed to paying her medical expenses on this.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting Stella please email  Jamie or Sandy.

Taking an easy dog from someone who has to move and rehoming him/her is not a huge challenge. The challenge is transporting and caring for dogs like Marshall, Dude, and Hutch,  Lucy and now Stella. The challenge is finding the funds to help the dogs in need of medical care.

Thatıs where YOU come in. We need donations to cover the medical bills for these special dogs. Remember we get no public or private funding. We rely on adoption fees and your donations to cover our expenses.

HERE IS WHAT HER FOSTER HOME HAD TO SAY ON 07/14/06 WHEN STELLA WAS WITH THEM FOR ONE DAY, THEN SHE WAS RETURNED TO HER OWNERS.

Here's a couple of pics. of beautiful Stella. She is calming down a bit this morning -- dozing on the couch in my office, rather make that sleeping on the couch in my office...

As for Stella, here are the few observations we have made about her - she's a lovebug - loves getting attention, she appears to know some commands like come and down - although she doesn't seem to know sit, which is weird since if you can get her to sit and then tell her down, she will comply. She walks beautifully on a leash with a halter. She is extremely friendly with other people and dogs - she and our dog really enjoy playing. She also seems to understand 'no' - which is good. She's curious about cats, although she does not appear aggressive towards them - I think she would probably be fine with cats with a little controlled interaction/positive reward training but because our one cat is sick we haven't really let them interact.

She's not exactly crate trained (didn't love going in one), but she did sleep just fine in the crate last night. Our dog is crate trained, and sleeps in her crate (door open) every night, so last night we put stella in a crate with our dog in another crate right next to her, and she was absolutely fine - no whimpering, pawing or anything.

She is a curious exuberant puppy -- who would do well with some training. She's very smart, and already seems to be learning her name.  I don't know how she is with kids since we don't have any but all in all I'd say she would be a lovely addition to a family, and would be a great companion with a little training.

Now...

Before her accident...

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read the information on our Adoption Procedures, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.

Adoptions Fee: $300
