04/30/07 Joe
Boxer has found himself back in rescue. This poor guy is just having rotten
luck. Joe was my foster before he was adopted and I felt compelled to do his
update. He did not come back to me because I have another foster and have
not the room.
Joe was treated for heartworm while with me and has fully recovered. The
two months he spent with my family we really fell in love him. Joe Boxer is
a good boy that is very obedient and responds well to commands. He is very
loyal and adores his family.
He has a strong instinct to protect his family. Because of this, Joe
needs a strong, confident pack leader that will relieve him of the
responsibilities that come along with being the leader of a pack. Someone
that will make it clear to Joe that it's not his job to protect the family
and understand the importance of not sending him mixed messages.
If you feel you are a strong willed, confidant, and calm person that has
the dedication and commitment to be a good pack leader and understand that
no dog is perfect, AABR has wonderful volunteers that will be more then
happy to give you the knowledge and the tools you need to make your
relationship with Joe a very fulfilled one. I will be the first to tell you
that you will not be sorry you did.
Joe is a wonderful dog that loves with his whole heart and bonds deeply
with his family.

Hi Ya'll. Joe started his heartworm treatment Monday the 11th. I wanted
to give one more update before he starts his treatment, after that there
won't be much to tell because he will have five weeks of bedrest.
I am so glad I had the opportunity to spend these few weeks with Joe
before his treatment. Even though he has had restrictions, my family has
really gotten a chance to see his personality. Let me tell you folks. Joe is
one of the best and easiest Boxers I have ever had the privilege of
fostering.
He is absolutely wonderful with kids of all ages. I have a nephew who is
one and a friend who has a three month old that Joe has recently met. He was
amazing with both of them. He was so gentle. My nephew didn't quite know
what to think when Joe went to him to say hello. Joe is easily three inches
taller then him. But Joe just laid down next to him and let my nephew slowly
make his way over to say hello. He was welcomed with gentle kisses.
Joe is also great with dogs. He and my male Dalmatian mix are great buds.
He tries to play but that is not allowed due to his condition. He has also
made friends with my nine yr old female Husky. They are great companions for
Joe right now because neither of them are playful and Joe can just kinda
hang out with them without them wanting to play.
Joe greets company with wiggles. He loves everyone. Some of my friends
are a bit skeptical of him due to his size. Have I mentioned Joe is BIG. I
tell them there crazy. You better hurry and get those applications in. I
have no doubt that once Joe is healthy and is ready for a new home he will
already be spoken for. Don't wait that long or it will be to late.

Joe
continues to do wonderfully. He really has such a sweet personality. He has
not met a single human he does not like, big or small.
He is a very quick
learner and is doing his schoolwork like a pro. By schoolwork I mean his
commands such as simple hand signals. He automatically sits and waits when
he sees his leash. He sits and waits after the door is opened verses rushing
out the open door. Inside he does try to become a bit playful. Who can blame
him after all the time in the crate due to his heartworms. I allow a small
bit of play because he has not started his treatment yet, but it is minimal.
A simple sharp Shhh will transform him from playful pup to gentle giant.
This guy is a dream on the leash and unfazed by anything we come across. I
live in the country so small animals such as squirrels and such are very
common. When he is on the lead he is only focused on me and what I will ask
of him next. He has shown no problem with anyone being near him while eating
or drinking. He continues to improve with my dogs. He has been loose inside
with one of my submissive male dogs several times.
If we did not already have five dogs, Joe would be here to stay. Whoever
is lucky enough to adopt this beautiful, big boy will not be disappointed.

Joe
Boxer has been with us for three days now. He is a wonderful boy. My husband
and I met Joe at a training session the rescue had a few weeks ago. We were
immediately drawn to him. He is a very sweet boy. Joe is heartworm and Lyme
positive. He was diagnosed with this a year ago and was left untreated.
Lucky for Joe, he found his way into rescue. He will be undergoing his rough
heartworm treatment in the comfort and security of my home. Joe minds very
well and is a quick learner. He has already learned that when I put the palm
of my hand up it means sit. He sits and waits for me to let him out of his
crate. He sits and waits for me to put his leash on before going out the
door. He walks on a leash like a pro. He never pulls or tugs, he walks by my
side or a bit behind me. Joe enjoys my kids, ages, 13, 11, and 3. His
stubby tail wags a mile a minute when he is able to be with them. I
have five other dogs and Joe is fine while going for walks with them.
I am taking it slow with the introductions because of his heartworms. It
would not be good for Joe to get excited or overly worked up. Once he starts
his treatment he will have to kept on bed rest and as quiet as possible, so
I'm in no hurry with intros, they will have plenty of time to get used to
each other. In the meantime, Joe gets inside time with us when the other
dogs are outside or crated.

I picked up Joe Boxer this afternoon. My husband and I met Joe a few weeks
ago at an AABR training. We were both smitten with him. We decided we
wanted to foster him while he undergoes his heartworm treatment.
Joe Boxer is a large boxer. He has a beautiful big head and from what I
can tell so far is a gentle giant. He knows some commands and sits on a
dime.
On the way home from picking Joe up, we got a flat tire while on the
highway. While my husband was changing the tire I took Joe for a walk. He
walks very well on the lead using a check chain. He was completely unfazed
by the highway traffic.
Upon returning home I did brief introductions with my fur babies (it was
dark by the time we got home). He seemed unfazed and comfortable with all
of them. I am keeping him crated for now until everyone gets used to each
other. I will continue with intros in the morning. I will be taking Joe on
walks with my guys but will have to keep him from getting overly excited
for now. Right now Joe Boxer is being very content in his crate. This is a
good thing because once he starts his heartworm treatment he will have to
kept crated and quiet at all times, only coming out to have bathroom
breaks and short, quiet walks to stretch his legs.
Joe is also being treated for Lyme. From the info on his paperwork from
the shelter, this poor guy was diagnosed with heartworm an Lyme almost a
year ago and was left untreated. I can only imagine the kind of life this
poor guy has lived thus far.
Well all that is behind him now. He will get the treatment he needs and he
will be good to go before to long never having to worry about being
neglected again.
Whoever adopts this wonderful dog will be not be sorry. He is absolutely
beautiful. He seems to be fine with other dogs and he is good with kids.
He is not overly active (that could be due to the heartworm he has been
living with for a yr). I will update more as I learn more about him.

BOXER JOE IS HEART WORM POSITIVE. WE ARE LOOKING FOR A HOME WHO WILL
FOSTER HIM WHILE HE IS UNDERGOING HEART WORM TREATMENT.
Be prepared to fall in love at first sight when you meet this guy. He has
a personality that just won’t quit! We had him at a volunteer event over the
weekend and he was a total hit, capturing the hearts of everyone he met.
Joe Boxer is a young boy who was surrendered to the shelter because he
had broken loose from his chain (he was chained out) and chased the goat. We
don’t have many details regarding his life up until now, but based on what
we do know, he has not had the kind of life most of us consider acceptable
for our Boxers. Joe has a very muscular build and once he puts on a little
needed weight, he will weigh in at approximately 75 pounds. He is a strong,
sleek boy, quite handsome! He is house broken and appears to be good with
other dogs, cats are unknown.
He is heartworm positive and finding a foster home for him to live
quietly in while undergoing the treatment is vitally important. He will need
to remain calm during the treatment, and kennel life simply is not conducive
to that. Please open your hearts and home to Joe and contact us about
fostering this sweet, sweet boy. Your kindness and generosity will be repaid
tenfold by the love and companionship he will give in return.
Thank you for your interest in Joe Boxer! |
