06/09/08 The
vets and volunteers that have cared for Mikey can not believe how well Mikey
has healed from his horrendous injuries!
Through it all, Mikey could not have been the better boxer!!!
Take a look at it now...

We've
done our first bandage changes and although it looks bad, it is so much
better than what it was before his surgery! We've masked the photo on
this page because it is very graphic and some of you may not want to see
them.
This boy is so good and so patient. With time and the proper care
and a bit of luck, Mikey will make some lucky family a great dog.
The luck he needs involves infection. His wounds were very dirty
and infected, and Mikey needs everything to go his way from here on.
We will keep you updated. If you can spare a contribution for Mikey,
his bills are mounting.

This pup is about 7 months old and was left at the NYC
shelter system by an individual who said that this poor little guy had been
hit by a car last Friday. But it was Monday, four days later, when they
decided they could not pay for the pups medical treatment!!!
ACC called Adopt A Boxer Rescue and told us that their vet
had examined him and felt he had a 4 day old compound fracture of his front
leg, numerous road injuries most likely caused by being dragged by a car,
and unknown other injuries. We were told that his injuries exceeded anything
that they could do for him, so of course AABR took him in.
We've named him Mikey after the volunteer who put everything else aside last
night to get this boy to our orthopedic veterinary surgeon.
This young boxer boy was in terrible shape and it was
initially thought that due to the 4 day delay in treatment, amputation of
his front leg was inevitable. But thanks to the expertise of the
veterinarians that help AABR, it now looks like Mikey will be able to keep
his leg.
Mikey's front leg bone, which at first looked like it was
fractured and protruding through the skin, was found to be intact. It was
visible due to the terrible muscle and tissue displacement he suffered from
being dragged. The docs repaired this damage, and put everything back in
place, and it is believed that Mikey will fully recover. The skin over the
bone could not be closed and he will have weeks of bandage changes while new
skin and tissue grow back. He has numerous other infected wounds which have
been excised and required drains. Mikey is on heavy antibiotics for
the infection that occurred over the 4 days that he was not treated!
Once this little guy is ready to leave the hospital, he
will need plenty of TLC and a foster home in the Westchester NY area so that
he can get his frequent follow up visits to the vet. We will keep you up to
date on his progress. We need a foster/adoptive home that can care for this
guy while he is recovering, and we need your help to pay for his medical
bills, which will continue on with his after care.
Please help us help Mikey. A donation today will help
Mikey and other Mikeys to come. Thank you. |
