2/27/11 - MEMORIAL In September of
2008, we flew from NH to PA to pick Jake Sr. up and bring him home. We
knew from his picture with the wiggly jiggly ball on the AABR website that
he was the guy for us. We are ever so grateful to Linda and Elaine of
AABR for letting us adopt him and for putting his picture with the big stick
on AABR's Christmas cards last year. It was bittersweet as we lost him
just before the holidays.
Jake had an amazing zest for life and he made us laugh many times a day.
Two months after we got Jake, we adopted a sister named Bella (fka
Slippers). If there was ever a match made in heaven, it was this one.
They stuck together like glue. Jake was so in love with her - he
licked her all day long.
In the two years we had Jake, he learned to swim, went hiking, walked
every day, went for rides, rode on our motorboat, and went canoeing.
Every day when we walked in the door, he took off to get his "squirrel toy"
and ran back to the door as he knew it was time for a walk. He was
such a happy boy - you couldn't help but love him.
Not a day goes by that we don't think of this precious boy. He was
taken suddenly and far too soon by cardiomyopathy, and we just weren't
ready. We miss him every day, and so does Bella and his 2 cats, L'real
and Sassy.
Rest in peace, sweet Jakey.

Jake is an
absolute dream of a dog. I cannot understand how his family could have given
him up. They obviously put a lot of time, love, and training into this fine
boy. He is housetrained, crate trained, walks beautifully on leash, and gets
along with everyone in the house. That is saying something considering he
has 4 other dogs, 1 cat, two birds, and me as roommates. He knows all of his
basic commands, and he is a total gentleman.
He's a pretty laid back boy, who is not much interested in running around
the yard like a maniac as most of the youngsters in this breed do. He
definitely keeps his eye on things, however, and will need slow, careful
introductions to folks on the opposite side of the fence. When we go out for
walks he is always pleased to meet folks coming down the street, but when
there is a fence in the mix caution is important. We have been working on
introducing him to the neighbors over the fence & he is improving quite a
bit.
He does have one interest that sends him over the moon! This boy loves a
ball! Not to chase mind you, but to wrestle, chew on, growl, bark at, and
generally carry around. He has them in several sizes, but his absolute
favorite is his big green giggle ball. He is absolutely hysterical with it,
and keeps me as entertained as he is.
He likes a comfy spot on the floor near the couch, or the couch if
there's space available, and is quite happy to rest with his head in your
lap. Jake is also quite the conversationalist. He just will suddenly strike
up a conversation with me in his own way. It usually starts with a little
grunt or whine to get my attention, then progresses to full out barking,
accompanied by the ever popular wiggles. When I say enough, he usually gives
me a somewhat disgruntled woof, and goes back to relaxing on his favorite
comfy spot under the window. I'm not sure what he's saying, but he seems to
appreciate the fact that I'm willing to listen.
Jake seems to adore children as well, and can't wait to meet kids of all
ages and cover them with big sloppy kisses. I imagine he has spent a lot of
time with them in the past. He has not been rough with them, only extremely
happy to meet them, and I think would do well with kids of just about any
age. He has also been just great with my cat, showing very little interest
if any most of the time.
Jake is simply a pleasure to be with. I do not have one negative comment
to make about him. Honestly, he is the easiest dog I have ever fostered, and
he will be sorely missed when he finds his forever home. Don't miss out on
the opportunity to make Jake a member of your family. He is truly one in a
million!

- Jake SR
"My family decided to move... without me. So I found myself
in a Philadelphia shelter.
I am handling this rough situation that life has dealt me like a true
gentleman. The volunteers have found me to be happy and gentle. I even heard
someone call me "smart and responsive"!
Will you be my hero?"
Jake is a handsome brindle boy estimated to be around 6-7 years old. He
was surrendered by his owners because they were moving. Jake is a happy and
friendly boy. He knows his basic commands and loves people. The previous
owners report that Jake is good with kids and other dogs.
If you are looking to take in a dog that will require minimal effort, the
"adult" boxers are the way to go!!!
