Jun
3, 2006 — Matthew, a 1-year-old boxer, has not yet
healed from the day his owner poured boiling water
onto his back. His skin is still raw, but his
rescuers say that he's come a long way. But
rehabilitating dogs with stories like Matthew's is
expensive, and Pennsylvania's Adopt A Boxer Rescue is
struggling to pay for costs such as vet bills.
Lynn Eason, a New Freedom volunteer with Adopt A
Boxer Rescue, said, "We're really trying to get the
word out about what we're doing." In addition to
keeping up with rehabilitation, the rescue's kennels
are filled and volunteers are searching for people
willing to provide foster care. For now, Eason
said the rescue is working with a couple of York
County residents to provide the temporary homes until
the animals can be permanently adopted.
The rescue is a volunteer, nonprofit organization
formed to rescue, rehabilitate and provide homes for
unwanted and abandoned boxer dogs in Pennsylvania and
surrounding states. The organization now has between
20 and 25 dogs.
One of the problems, Eason said, is that while
boxers make great family dogs, as puppies they are
full of energy. At times, that can be overwhelming for
some people. But for a pet owner who can cope
with the high energy, it's worth it, she said.
"They stay like clowns and goofballs to the end," she
said.
